Many causes: Abdominal bloating can have many causes including ibs, celiac, small bowel bacterial overgrowth, c. Difficile or other pathogen, lactose intolerance, gallstones, ovarian cancer, pancreatic problems, an obstructive problem w/ the colon, inflammation anywhere in the abdomen or urinary tract leading to an ileus(slow down in the contractility of the colon), etc..Go back to ur doc for a more thorough evaluation. ...Read more

Probably both: It's common for people who normally tolerate milk to have gas, cramps, loose stools, etc with milk, cheese, etc after viral gastroenteritis ("stomach flu"). The infection reduces the intestinal enzyme lactase, which digests milk sugar. Poorly digested milk gives intestinal bacteria a feast -- and whey THEY digest it, acid and gas are produced, with symptoms like yours. It should improve soon. ...Read more

I have horrible smelling bowel movements and gas after gastroenteritis. Stool looks a little loose. It has been about 8 days. Muscle weakness too. ??

Gastroenteritis: I don't think that the horribly smelling stool is of concern but the loose stools of viral gastroenteritis usually resolve after a week although it can be followed by an irritable bowel syndrome. If significant diarrhea is prolonged the stool should be cultured to check for pathogens that need treatment. In the meantime avoid harsh roughage,take kaopectate (kaolin and pectin) as needed. ...Read more
