How long does it take for the flank pain from a kidney infection go away? Only have 2 days of amoxicillin left and it's not as bad but still hurts

Been on cipro (ciprofloxacin) recpen last day of amoxil for kidney infection still have flank pain and cloudy urine if infection still there should I be admitted?

Probably: Best thing is to reach out and call your doctor. If you go to an er who does your urine test, blood test and temperature, they can also call your doctor after that. If you still have a white count, fever, and dirty urine, they will admit you. ...Read more

I woke up last night with diarrhea, nausea, flank pain, fever, I have not been feeling well, is this a kidney infection? I am on flagyl, ER or not?

Acute infection: If you cannot find a doctor who will see you then it would be prudent to go to the er. You don't say why you are taking Metronidazole (flagyl), but that is not likely to be effective if you actually have an upper uti. Hope you are better quickly. ...Read more

Went 2 ER for severe flank pain & fever. High WBC &high neutrophils. U.S shows right pyelonephritis of upper pole but urine negative for bacteria, how?

Went 2 ER for severe flank pain & fever. High WBC &high neutrophils. U.S shows right pyelonephritis of upper pole but urine negative for bacteria, how?

Obstructed?: Obstruction of the upper part of the ureter or within the kidney could do this. E.g. from a kidney stone or papillary necrosis. That is, the infected area is not draining, and so no bacteria or white blood cells in the urine. If so, it's quite serious. It is common not to see bacteria on urinalysis but they are found in culture. Keep working closely with your doctors. ...Read more

Months of left side/flank pain & 2 neg cts. Then sudden blood in urine/clots, & bladder spasms. Diangosis pyelonephritis. Can this explain pain for months?

Partially: Very possible that a low grade infection caused the initial symptoms, then became full blown pyelonephritis, which requires initial IV antibiotics and long term treatment (at lest 3-4 weeks). Then need urologic evaluation to look for anatomic abnormalities for stones, masses, etc. That may be contributing. ...Read more

27yr old female with pyelonephritis, symptomatic low blood pressure, r flank pain and intermittent l chest pain, on antibiotics; what can I do?

See below: Hopefully you had a urine culture done and are on an antibiotic to which the causative bacteria is susceptible. Treatment should last 10-14 days depending on the antibiotic chosen. It is a good idea to have a renal ultrasound done to be sure you do not have any kidney stones or obstruction. Fever and flank pain may take 3-4 days to resolve after start of effective antibiotic rx. ...Read more

Rbc and WBC casts in urine. Right flank pain. No fever. Pyelonephritis diagnosis but dr told me he wasn't sure that maybe something more going on. Ideas?

Rbc and WBC casts in urine. Right flank pain. No fever. Pyelonephritis diagnosis but dr told me he wasn't sure that maybe something more going on. Ideas?

This is serious: A nephrologist or pathologist needs to look at the urine to confirm the presence of red cell casts. If they are indeed present, you have glomerulonephritis of some sort. Since you state that you have systemic lupus, this is the obvious first consideration, and the presumptive (and likely) diagnosis is lupus glomerulonephritis. A nephrology referral is in order now. ...Read more

Does pyridium (phenazopyridine) prevent a urine dipstick for leukocytes from showing? Can a woman with flank pain and urinary burning on pyridium (phenazopyridine) have a pyelonephriti

Does pyridium (phenazopyridine) prevent a urine dipstick for leukocytes from showing? Can a woman with flank pain and urinary burning on pyridium (phenazopyridine) have a pyelonephriti

Yes and yes: Pyridium (phenazopyridine) dyes the urine orange & that color can interfere with the dipstick test for leukocytes. But the gold-standards for diagnosing UTI's is looking for leukocytes under the microscope (for immediate dx) & culture. Pyridium (phenazopyridine) does not interfere with those. Pyridium (phenazopyridine) only reduces symptoms & doesn't treat the infection. You might have pyelonephritis, which can be serious. Seek medical attention ASAP! ...Read more

Is it possible to have acute pyelonephritis with a negative CT scan, urinalysis pos for infection, flank pain, nausea/vomiting, fever?

I believe so: I am not a radiologist, but as a pathologist I can assure you that I've seen cases of pyelonephritis that i'd think are are too subtle anatomically to show on x-rays. White cell casts in the urine establish the diagnosis, and if there's white cells in the urine and flank pain and fever, the presumptive diagnosis is kidney infection, imaging or no. ...Read more

I've been having low back and flank pain on my right side and my creatinine level is 16.9. Is this kidney infection?

I've been having low back and flank pain on my right side and my creatinine level is 16.9. Is this kidney infection?

Unlikely: The creatinine level indicates significant kidney disease that would have to affect both kidneys (did you mean bun/cr ratio?). Infection usually affects only one or the other. If there is already underlying kidney problems, then infection could worsen things. Difficult to provide more insight without more information. ...Read more

I am in the hospital right now with a severe kidney infection. The only medication that helps the flank pain makes me itch terribly. What is the max?

Ask your doctor. ..: You should ask the attending doctor who is treating you because s/he knows more about your individual conditions than anyone online.
