How often do you get diarrhea with celiac disease?

Bowels & celiac dis.: Celiac disease, among its many manifestations, may result in diarrhea. Simplistically, exposure of intestine to gluten causes inflammation of affected gut lining, with a decrease in absorptive surface of that gut, & resulting malabsorption of food. The best & most enduring fix is to avoid eating gluten. Serum tissue transglutaminase antibody can help determine how successfully gluten is avoided. ...Read more

For celiacs: can you still get diarrhea sometimes being gluten free?

Sneaky gluten: In addition to the usual causes for diarrhea, celiac patients are at constant risk of inadvertent ingestion of gluten. No matter how careful you are, if you eat out, food you get may easily become contaminated by use of a utensil that has been in other food, or a cook just not believing that a tiny amount of flour in something really can make someone sick. ...Read more

An indoscopy showed i may have celiac disease .. How often would u get diarrhea with celiac disease?

An indoscopy showed i may have celiac disease .. How often would u get diarrhea with celiac disease?

Gluten in diet: By having gluten in your diet, even in hidden sources that you might not be aware of, the diarrhea would be evidence to you that you have gluten in the diet. It can be from cross contamination in restaurants, or in factors that use wheat to coat food products so they dont stick to the conveyor belt and dont list it as an ingredient in the food. It all is dose dependent and very individual. ...Read more

Common causes of severe constipation are meds induced, diet related, not drinking enough fluids, and metabolic changes. Colonic inertia is another cause which requires a detailed workup. A 1/2 hour after I eat a hamburger & fries, I had diarrhea. has few other Xs w/ certain, Products, bread or pasta could I have celiac disease?

Maybe: Celiac disease is possible, so is gall bladder disease and bacterial overgrowth of the intestine (esp if you've been on long term oral antibiotics for acne or long term meds like Prilosec). Irritable bowel syndrome also seems to be aggravated by certain types of carbohydrates so it can mimic celiac disease. See your doc. Get it checked out ...Read more

I have celiac disease. Eat 100% gluten free, still get diarrhea. I take 12-30 imodium (loperamide) to stop it. Is this okay?

Talk to your Dr: 1) Your doctor can check antibody levels as a surrogate to celiac disease activity. If they are up you may be eating gluten in hidden items (for example if something is fried in oil that also fired wheat containing food). 2) Another consideration is small bacterial overgrowth. Talk to your doctor to see if this fits. 3) Alternatively you may be in the rare group who are refractory to the diet. ...Read more

22/f. I get diarrhea after I have 1 mixed drink with vodka, but no diarrhea when I drink beer? I do have celiac disease if that plays a role in it..?

If celiac, then...: ..to be safe, stay away from all wheat-based vodkas if you have Celiac disease or a gluten sensitivity. However, you can still opt for a non-wheat, potato, corn, or grape based vodka which are typically cleared for gluten free consumption. The same holds for beer. ...Read more

Once or twice a wk, for years, I get severe stomach cramps & diarrhea but only after I lay down @ night or in the middle of the night. Celiac disease?

Vague symptoms...: The symptoms you described are not diagnostic for celiac disease (or any other illness). You should be seen by your doctor where they can get a more thorough history and do an exam. I'd advise keeping a food and symptom diary to help with that appointment. Lab tests can be done to test for celiac. Take care. ...Read more

Can low dose of amitriptyline take away symptoms of celiac disease? Specifically, chronic diarrhea and lack of appetite?

Can low dose of amitriptyline take away symptoms of celiac disease? Specifically, chronic diarrhea and lack of appetite?

Combating symptoms: Amitriptylene has anticholinergic and antihistaminic side effects that can slow the bowel and increase appetite. In this way it can counteract some of the symptoms you're having (the chronic diarrhea and poor appetite). You'll need to work with your doctor to arrive at a dose that works well for you, balancing out these processes in a positive way. You'll still need to avoid gluten. ...Read more
