Not much longer: The initial pain you're having is likely your uterus cramping around your iud and the iud getting situated in the uterus. They're getting to know each other and give them some time. If still painful next week, see your doctor to confirm good placement. In the meantime use heat packs, tylenol, (acetaminophen) and Ibuprofen 600mg every 6 hours to help with cramping. See a doctor for any foul odors/discharge. ...Read more

Don't do that: Irregular bleeding from an iud insertion could take as long as 6 weeks to stop. Taking your iud out now would be a waste. If you still have bleeding this time next month, then you should have it checked again. ...Read more

It is common to have: irregular bleeding in the first 3 months, sometimes heavy. However once the Mirena (levonorgestrel) has been assimilated periods become much lighter, often times disappearing altogether. This is a desirable side effect for most women. However, if your periods are getting heavier not lighter, it is time to revisit your GYN and ask about possibly switching you to another type of IUD or other. ...Read more

See your doctor: A Mirena (levonorgestrel) iud is placed in the uterus with the strings protruding through the cervix for later iud removal. An iud is still a foreign body which can alter menstrual flow (usually for the better) & cramping. Ultrasound can check proper position of the iud. Discharge with odor may signify vaginal bacterial infection. See your doctor to evaluate all of the above. ...Read more

See your physician: Your physician can do an ultrasound and confirm that the Mirena (levonorgestrel) is in the right place. I would not recommend hunting for the other string. If you feel one, the other is probably there somewhere. You may have ovulated and be having cramping from that. If you are finished with childbearing, you may want to consider essure. A permanent contracepiton. ...Read more

You should schedule an appointment with your doctor. He or she can do a pelvic examination and perform an ultrasound to confirm its location. Use a backup method of birth control just to be safe until your appointment. ...Read more
