Cough (Definition)

Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more

Every winter I get a severe cough in spasms that lasts for 4 months.seems to be lasting longer each year.not asthma test done.Antibiotics no good ?

Possibilities...: A cough that lasts for 4 months is by definition a chronic cough. Possible causes include bronchospasm, GERD, sinus disease. Each of these should be aggressively treated until the cough is controlled. The likely diagnosis is bronchospasm which can be treated with bronchodilator and steroid inhalers. Antibiotics are not needed since an infection would be shorter duration. See a lung doctor. ...Read more

When i get a cold it takes 3 weeks to get over it, longer if I have a cough. I have asthma too , could that be why it takes longer to recover ?

Yes: Asthma is a common reason why a cough lasts for a few weeks after a cold, but a long-lasting cough is becoming more and more common, even in people without asthma. I am seeing the cough from a cold virus last 6-12 weeks much more commonly than it did 10-20 years ago. ...Read more

Wheezing&cough when i lay down..Cant breathe feels like an asthma..Usually last for 3 hours after i stand up..What could this be?

Let's see: Do you meant that you start to wheeze and cough only when you lie down, then this lasts up to 3 hrs after standing up? If so, this may be from acid reflux which often co-exists with asthma and makes asthma symptoms worse. See your doctor about this. ...Read more

Determine cause: Chronic cough is most commonly due to 3 conditions: asthma, post-nasal drip, or GERD (heartburn). You might have one or a combination of all three. Post-viral cough is also very common and can last for weeks. Further workup by Allergist is helpful as they can perform a more detailed assessment including skin testing, pulmonary function testing, and.chest x-ray. Treatment will depend on cause. ...Read more

I had bronchitis. lost my voice for 3 days. Then i got a cough/lasted for 2 months now. Taken steroids, asthma and antibotics the cough wont go away.

I had bronchitis. lost my voice for 3 days. Then i got a cough/lasted for 2 months now. Taken steroids, asthma and antibotics the cough wont go away.

Time for evaluation: If you haven't had a chest x ray, it would be a good start. You can have what is called increased vocal fold sensitivity after a cold, but that should last about this long. Other considerations are allergy, sinusitis, and reflux. Allergy and asthma should have at least temporarily improved on steroids. Seeing an ENT can frequently be a good start when dealing with chronic cough ...Read more

Post-nasal drip?: When treating a chronic cough, you must treat every possible contributor to the cough or it won't resolve. Post-nasal drip or any sinus condition can result in bronchospasm and, thus, the cough. Perhaps you need to add a nasal steroid spray to your regimen in addition to a steroid inhaler and your other meds. You may need a very slow steroid taper to get to the lowest possible effective dose. ...Read more

Why does my heart race when I am lying down on my side? Why does my asthma act up when i'm lying down which makes me cough for a long period.

Go see your doctor: Tell him/her what you've noted above. Neither heart rate nor asthma should be positional. In other words, neither should respond to or be affected by your position. So best to get complete evaluation. You didn't mention taking any medications so best to confirm your asthma diagnosis including severity so that you can receive appropriate standard of care. ...Read more
