Pulmonary embolism: Patients with a pulmonary emoblism (pe) do not get chest pain. If it is not fatal, patients with pe's have shortness of breath. Most people do not die of pe's, if they are not large. That is not the case if they have a large pe. If the pe is large enough, death occurs quite quickly. Test results: A chest radiograph may be normal, EKG changes include SVT and an elevated BNP may be present. If large enough, PEs affect oxygenation and cause shortness of breath. If you had chest pain, you most likely did have a chest x ray, EKG and an oxygen level. If all your screening tests were normal, it is less likely that you had a PE.
