Not normal: It is never normal to have blood in your stools. That said, it doesn't mean it has to be due to something serious as hemorrhoids are both common & a common cause of blood in stool. Blood in the stool should be evaluated. If bright red or maroon then a lower GI tract scope (colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, proctoscopy) is first step. If black bloody stool then upper scope indicated. See a GI doctor.

Gastrointestinal Bleeding (Definition)

A long tube runs from the mouth to the anus. It includes, in order, the mouth, throat, esophagus, stomach, small intestine (duodenum, jejunum, ileus), caecum, the ascending, transverse, descending, and sigmoid colon (or large intestine) and the rectum. The space inside that tube, the lumen, is considered to be outside of the body. When we bleed into that space ...Read more

How long does blood in stool associated with intussusception last?

How long does blood in stool associated with intussusception last?

Less than a week: Depends on how severe the intussusception was. Usually after successful radiographic reduction, blood in the stool should resolve within a week. If there is persistent lower GI bleeding, then need to consider other causes (eg polyps, meckel diverticulum, etc) that could account for both problems.

Blood in stool after drinking last night?

Blood in stool after drinking last night?

Blood in stool: Blood in stool is abnormal and must be explained. If it's a tiny amount of bright red blood not mixed with stool, most likely hemorrhoids or an anal fissure caused it. If there is much blood mixed with stool more serious possibilities include diverticulosis, inflammatory bowel disease or a growth in the colon. For persistent, heavy bleeding evaluation in the hospital emergency room is needed.

Emergency: Black and tarry stool for 3 weeks and today with a lot of fresh blood in stools indicates that you are most likely having GI (gastrointestinal) bleeding. I urge you to go to the er immediately for evaluation since GI bleeding can be severe and serious. All the best, hk.

Medical Examination: You need to have a doctor check and examine you. That is the only way to find out if it is something benign (like hemorrhoids) or it can even be cancerous. Only a doctor's examination can help you to sort it out. Do not ignore or delay this examination....it can be something serious and prove dangerous to your life.

How to tell if I have colitis I only had mucus last week blood in stool dry stool no symptoms or pain I'm a hypochondria dr and nurse say I'm crazy?

Colitis: The only way to be completely sure is to do colonoscopy. Only a doc can do it. However, based on your symptoms and physical exam and some labwork, they can tell you with some probability whether it is one or another disease.

I went to dr that gave me my colon test 3 yrs ago for fresh blood in stool he was fairly sure it was a internal hemorriod how long can hemorriod bleed?

Bleeding hemorrhoid: Hemorrhoids can bleed as long as they are being irritated/abraded by hard stools or frequent stools or straining to have a bowel movement. Use stool softener (not laxative) &/or increased dietary fiber or fiber supplement with plenty of fluid. Use otc hemorrhoid preps to help shrink & calm inflammation of hemorrhoids. If bleeding persists, see doc again.

What can cause on and off belly pains that has lasted a few months and bright red blood in stool on and off in a child?

What can cause on and off belly pains that has lasted a few months and bright red blood in stool on and off in a child?

Anal fissure/polyp: Anal fissure from constipation is most likely the cause and treated easily. Occasionally a child may have a juvenile polyp and it bleeds as it is trying to fall off. Would treat constipation first and if still occurs, see your doctor.

Is it normal though after having a bloody stool for so long to have the red jelly looking blood in stool or after & bleed for rest of the day?

Is it normal though after having a bloody stool for so long to have the red jelly looking blood in stool or after & bleed for rest of the day?

Bloody stool: Is never normal! Jelly looking blood is suggestive of clots. This is as close as it gets to a medical emergency. Do not delay and go to the nearest full service hospital er. Have someone drive you as the risk of rapid bleeding and shock is too high to risk driving yourself.

Hello, I'm 19 years old, have had very occasional red blood in stool since last summer. Now some change in stool caliber. Parents say not to worry?

Sounds like you are: Constipated. Occasional blood in the stools are normal if you suffer from constipation.Change in caliber might be more concerning. You need to discuss this with your physician to be sure it is just constipation and not colon cancer or other medical conditions causing blood and change in stool caliber. Erring on the safe side. Please get checked.

It could just be a: Sign of ibs or colitis.Any alteration in the consistency of the stool or presence of blood be it a stain or gross bleeding deserves an evaluation by a GI specialist which includes colonoscopy. Hope they'll find the cause of your symptoms! Take care!

High fiber cereal: Try some high fiber cereal. Read the labels: most cereals contain about 2 g of fiber but some have 6-10. Go for those. The big mama is all bran or fiber one with 13-14 g of fiber.
