5-10 years: Paraguard (copper-based) & the Mirena (levonorgestrel) (progestin based) are effective for 10 & 5 years respectively. If you're referring to the side effects of spotting or cramping, this usually last a week or two & with menstrual cycles for the first few months. It is variable, but typically breakthough bleeding last 2-3 days. Some unfortunately can last couple of weeks...Often lighter and less crampy than normal menstrual flow.
