How Long Does An Hiv Test Take
Hiv infection is caused by a retrovirus....This retrovirus binds to CD4 cells (for the most part). You may detect the virus by several different methods. An elisa test (enzyme linked immunosorbent assay). You may also detect it by doing a test referred to as a western blot (a gel protein electrophoresis). Thirdly by pcr (polymerase chain reaction) which ...Read more
I did 4th Generation HIV test after around 4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,14,15 weeks of an exposure.
Is this 100% conclusive? can i get back safely to my wife
Sero-conversion: The whole concept of delayed sero-conversion dates back to old & sloppy tests. PCR testing now will show virus in the blood with or without antibodies. If you need to cling to the old adages...at 6 months..99.99% of the population will have developed antibodies after an exposure..thus the 6 month window. I believe a colleague of mine Lyssette Cardona, MD is in Dubai..she's one of the best!! ...Read more
How long should I wait to get an accurate HIV test after (maybe) got exposed to it? And how long does the test itself take to give back the results?
Rapid testing HIV: You can get oraquick otc, a home oral test that is quite accurate, and then follow up with a more detailed antibody test at 4-6 weeks and again in three months. There are rare individuals who do not become positive until 6 mos. If you want to spend the money there is an RNA pcr which will be definitive if negative at 4 wks. Make sure, however, that you also get tested for other stds. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Depends on type: An HIV test can be done instantly in the doctor's office (results are not as reliable), or it can be done in a regular lab. Usually not more than 2-3 days. However, many labs "batch" test -- meaning they only test for certain analytes once per week or every 3 days. So, maybe that is the delay... ...Read more

I took a oraquick at home HIV test that you buy from drugstore 6 years after possible exposure. Is that too long after to take it? I did two of them to be extra sure, if that matters. Both negative.
HIV: It is never too long or too late to get tested if you had a possible exposure to HIV and want to know if you contracted the disease. It can however be too early for some people if they test too soon after an exposure to catch the virus before it becomes apparent on usual blood screening tests. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Naat HIV test has the shortest window period of only about 2 weeks. Does this length apply even to those who take longer than average to seroconvert?
Unfortunately,: "herpes is forever" is all too true. On a brighter note, it can be successfully suppressed with anti-viral drugs, either with each flare, if infrequent, or with long-term suppression. Since herpes lesions compromise the integrity of skin/mucous membranes, it puts you at greater risk for acquiring hiv. Thus, always use protection & practice safe sex. See pcp for rx for anti-viral meds. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
HIV Exposure: First, if one has an acute exposure one should not wait at all. We only have a 72 hour window to prevent infection. Second, if there is a high risk exposure one can get a viral RNA test after 21 days that is 100% accurate. Third: the antibody testing that is routine for HIV can miss infection for up to six months after exposure. ...Read more

Depends on timing: It depends on the particular test (or combination of tests) done and how long since last possible exopsure. The DUO test (HIV antibody plus p24 antigen) is conclusive any time 4 weeks or more after exposure. Most antibody-only tests ("third generation" tests) 6-8 weeks, even though official advice says to wait 3 months. Older antibody tests and the rapid oral fluids test still require 3 months. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

There are several ways to detect the HIV virus. The first is by antibodies. This includes eia (enzyme immuno assay). The rapid HIV tests are these types.
