Hi I got treated at my ER last night for allergic reaction to hair dye and it's comes back today what should I do?

Allergic Reaction: I'm not sure what your treatment entailed last night. Hopefully, they gave you instructions for continued treatment. If they did not, then you need to return for care either to your regular physician, an urgent care or to the ER if you are having difficulty breathing, swallowing or closing up of your throat. If you just have a rash then I would take antihistamines until you can be seen. ...Read more

Contact dermatitis: You must be very frustrated and I'll bet the itching is unbearable! I think you need to continue treatment to manage symptoms until this reaction works it's way out of your system. Are/were you using oral glucocorticosteroids (Prednisone, Medrol) as well as massaging a topical steroid lotion in the scalp? There may also be a superimposed infection that needs to be treated. You'll get better. ...Read more

I'm a hairdresser. Can the odor from hair dye cause an allergic reaction or the throat to swell/close?

Yes, tho...: ..it techically isn't an allergy. Could be hypersensitivity to the odor of the aerosol which can actually trigger tightness in upper airways such as laryngospasm or paradoxical vocal cord movement. Sensation usually triggers coughs but highly distressing airway spasm may develop. Sipping water and exiting area help. Can't rule out asthma so I'd see an airway specialist: allergist/ent/or pulmonary. ...Read more

Exam needed: Reactions to hair dye do occur and will resolve after a period of time. In the meantime apply warm soaks and, if possible, apply a combination of antibacterial and cortisone type cream until seen ...Read more
