Fracture (Definition)

A fracture is a broken bone. As there is cartilage at the end of many bones at the joint, a fracture may also include a break in the cartilage. Fractures and broken bones are the same thing. It seems that many believe that a "fracture" is a lesser injury or an incomplete break in the bone, but this is not correct. Fractures may be displaced or ...Read more

On 4/12/16 I fractured T9,T11, T12,L1. The VA did nothing. Still intense pain & now they suggest P.T. Outside Dr said kyphoplasty. Will PT work?

Depends : It really is based upon the specific cause of your pain. If you had multiple vertebral fractures in April, 2016; they should be well healed by now. Kyphoplasties are usually not considered an option in fractures over 6 months for the reason that by then they are usually healed. You need to be evaluated for the exact cause of your pain, then you can choose best options for you. ...Read more

Further studies: X-ray findings of a vertebral fracture don't usually change much , even years after a fracture has healed. Although everyone is different, 5 months after a vertebral fracture you "should" be fairly well recovered". You may want to ask for an MRI looking for other components to your injury that may explain your continued pain, such as a herniated disc. ...Read more

Fractured t10 vertebrae 8 months ago. No degree of healing on X-rays. Bone density tested but I'm only 25. Is there other possibilities as to why?

A traumatic: fracture can occur with normal bone density. Did you have significant trauma? Patients with abnormally low bone density are at risk for stress and insufficiency fractures, but anyone can get a fracture from trauma. Once a vertebral body sustains a compression fracture, it never regains its normal height. It will heal maintaining the compression deformity. ...Read more

Partner had accident 2yrs ago, fractured t9 ribs and "small" lung puncture. No surgery. Ongoing minor cough all seasons ever since. Any correlation?

Probably not: An isolated rib fracture and small pneumothorax should leave no lasting effects. If the cough is productive, especially mixed with blood, the initial injury may have been more severe than described. I have a compression fracture of the t9. Its been 9 weeks since I hurt my back. Can I shoot a rifle or muzzle loader for deer season in a couple days?

Depends: I would not do this as you are still in the healing phase. It is not clear as to how this happened but if trauma it is not wise to do this. If this is due to osteoporosis it is not wise. I suggest that you avoid this but if this is imperative get your doctor's advice. ...Read more

Have compression fracture at t10 for over 6 yrs. About once a mth i get back pain, chest pain and headache from this area, help was diagnosed with compression fracture at t10, and have had two spinal shots, about 5-6 yrs ago. Most of the time I am fine,

I : I agree that the jaw pain is not related to the spine fracture. Chronic back pain is fairly common. Maintaining ideal body weight, keeping good posture habits, regular stretching and exercise program, having a good mattress, putting pillows under knees at night to keep them bent are excellent measures to decrease or avoid flare ups. I personally like acupuncture and the use of interferential unit for these cases. Try to avoid the use of narcotics since it adds way too many problems including constipation, tolerance, chemical dependency and many other unintended consequences. ...Read more
