Is cervical polyp removal done under general or local Anesthesia in obgyn office or with no Anesthesia?

Is cervical polyp removal done under general or local Anesthesia in obgyn office or with no Anesthesia?

Depends: Hi Candi,

It depends on the size and placement of the polyp. A physician may elect to remove a polyp without anesthesia in the office if it is readily visualized with the naked eye and with proper instruments. If a polyp is large and the physician feels that an office proceedure would be uncomfortable to her patient, then he/she may decide that the O. R. would be the best place with anesthesia. ...Read more

If a cervical polyp was dislodged during sex would it cause a lot of bleeding, or just a little spotting?

NMS: This is not my specialty and thus I had not bothered to answer it earlier. The answer is depending on the vascularity and the size of the polys. If less vascular, the smaller the size, the less bleeding.

Why do docs recommend removing cervical polyp while pregnant if the polyp is bleeding? Wouldn't the bleeding stop eventually or could it be endless?

Why do docs recommend removing cervical polyp while pregnant if the polyp is bleeding? Wouldn't the bleeding stop eventually or could it be endless?

Bleeding: Most of the cervical polyps are benign so normally they would leave it alone until after the pregnancy. If the polyp is rather large then they might be concerned that the bleeding might cover up other potentially important sources of bleeding related to the pregnancy. It is probably because of the size and continued bleeding that they want to take it out. ...Read more

Vaginal bleeding (not rectal) after bowel movement, why could this be? Had cervical polyp removed 3 years ago if this is relevant?

Vaginal bleeding (not rectal) after bowel movement, why could this be? Had cervical polyp removed 3 years ago if this is relevant?

I'd recommend getting an exam and if there's no polyp visible, and no other concerns (infection, inflammation, or abnormal Pap smear) then I'd recommend a pelvic ultrasound to look deeper. ...Read more
