It also depends upon the speed of the taper, if at all and whether your brain is able to produce the necessary chemicals to compensate for the withdrawal. Some of what people think is withdrawal is actually the person re experiencing their original anxiety disorder to varying degrees. When i take a person off Klonopin (clonazepam) I am more inclined to lower the higher doses at a fairly conservative rate until the person is down to about 2 mg a day at which point i lower doses down at the rate of 1/8 of a milligram per month so that the person basically has time to recoup and the brain is not suddenly hit by massive withdrawal symptoms. I think thatmuch of what happens in psychiatry to hurt the patient is not so much the starting of the patient on the medication to begin with, rather than overzealous rate of rapid withdrawal from the drug that is generally completely unnecessary.
