How Long Can You Live With Undiagnosed Colon Cancer
The answer depends on the type of tumor, stage at which it is present and whether there are metastases. Why wait to see how long you will live? Go get yourself examined properly.
If it is early and still left untreated one can live for years or if advanced may only have survival in terms of months. Early diagnosis and treatment is best! Read more
Cancer is a group of diseases that is characterized by uncontrolled cell growth leading to invasion of surrounding tissues that spread to other parts of the body. Cancer can begin anywhere in the body and is usually related to one or more genetic mutations that allow normal cells to become malignant by interfering with internal cellular control mechanisms, such as programmed cell death or by preventing ...Read more
Depends on stage etc: Will depend on the stage, age, respond to therapy, other biomarkers /prognostic markers/ biology of the cancer, your overall condition etc. According to the seer- 5 year survival rate for localized (confined to primary site) is 89.9%; with regional (spread to regional lymph nodes) - is about 69.6% and with distant (cancer has metastasized) is about11.9%. Varies. ~10yrs: In general, we think about 10 years. Hence the "standard" colon screening recommendation (by colonoscopy) of every 10 years if the colon is well prepped and without pre-cancerous polyps. Colon cancer can grow faster especially in some familial syndromes. Individuals with polyps may and likely do need more frequent followup. Recs individualized by the GI physician. Roughly one year: The immunogenic tumor protein, a post translational modification of MUC5ac is found in most colon Ca. When polyoma enters bowel to form a field effect, one site will develop a Ca. If resected and premalignant normal appearing cells which express MUC 5ac are left behind, suppression is eliminated and one of the foci, staining + for MUC5ac will grow and replace anastomosis in about 1 yr. Years....we think.: Every individual tumor is different. The "teaching" is it takes 5 years for a polyp to undergo malignant change (turn into cancer) from there, it depends on location, age and many other factors we don't yet understand. Colon cancer can be indolent (slow growing) or aggressive. It depends on the individual cancer, and everyone is different. Read more
How long can colon cancer go untreated once u first have symptoms of it...like partial obstruction and pain?
It depends on the location of the cancer. Cancers on the right side cause anemia before causing obstruction. Cancers on the right side are more likely to cause obstruction. Either of these symptoms is not an early sign. It also depends on the biologic characteristic of the tumor.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form.
Practice safe sex, if you have sex. Read more
How long does colon cancer take to develop from stage to stage? How long have you had it by the time you can see it?
A long time: Colon cancer is unusual in that it follows the "polyp-to-cancer" sequence. Colon cancer does NOT develop with a single genetic mistake from normal to full blown cancer like many others (breast, prostate). The process usually takes an average of 12 years. From stage to stage is probably a couple of years, The recent hullaballoo at the VA demonstrated that even a one year wait may not matter! Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Maybe: Colon cancer is dangerous unless treated and surgically removed, and can spread to lymph nodes or other organs such as the liver. It can grow and block the intestine, or bleed slowly and cause anemia. Once it is treated, if found early, there may be little or no long term problems. Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Yes: Some live 10+ years, some do not make it to 1year post-diagnosis. It depends on the nature of the tumor, where it has spread to, how much of it there is and in how many places, and how well it responds to treatment. Some stage 4 cancers can be removed entirely by surgery, but all require some form of chemotherapy for full treatment. Discuss with an experienced surgeon and oncologist! An average response to chemotherapy for Colon cancer lasts 9 to 12 months (range from 6 months to 2 years).
But it depends on how many tumors you have and their original size and the degree of tumor regression (shrinkage). Some tumors can regress nicely and may even go away, in which case you can gain some years of life and an occasional Cure is even possible. Ask your doctor to further address thi Read more
If a scope shows that I have colon cancer after 6 months of low iron and other symptoms, what are my chances of survival if I've had it for that long?
DEPENDS: The prognosis for colon cancer does not depend on the length of time that you have had symptoms. It does depend on size and depth of the tumor, if it has spread to lymph nodes or other places and genetics of the cancer itself. Some patients have very advanced tumors with no symptoms while some have symptoms and have a very curable cancer. Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Inlikely: Constipation itself does not lead to colon cancer. That being said the acute development of constipation that doesn't resolve with dietary modification and stool softener a can signify the development of a colon cancer and should always be evaluated by a gastroenterologist.
