How Long Can You Give A Baby Gripe Water And Is It Dangerous
Is it safe to give an 8 month old baby Infant Tylenol (acetaminophen) every day during teething to help with teething pain & discomfort? Baby's weight is 18 lbs.
Doubt any harm: A variety of items have been offered to qwell fussy babys since the 1700's, most implying some sort of stomach upset as the cause. A variety of gripe waters are available, some monitored by the fda and some not. Most appear to have harmless ingredients & in small amounts are probably fine. I have never recomended them. Unsure ingredients: Doctors usually don't give babies any medications, even over-the-counter items, unless there's good benefit. A mom can bring the item to the doctor to check the ingredients, but a little bit of a trusted brand of "gripe water" drops is ok to try. It may or may not help any colicky symptoms. No Evedence: Gripe water is an old english homeopathic remidy for infant reflux and many other ailments. The origional version was essentialy herbal tea and about 8% alcohol. No wonder it calmed down babies. Todays formulations do not have alcohol. However, there is no evedence gripe water helps sooth infants. More importantly, there is no evedence to affirm its safty. Define & use natural: If breast fed, stooling less often& skipping days I would leave it alone if still soft. Bf infants can stool a little every feed or a crib full once a week. Likely safe...: ...But probably not effective. Reflux is normal in many babies. The children normally grow out of it toward the end of their first year.
