Can you tell me what you suggest if someone is put on life support, do they induce a coma or can that person be awake just not able to talk?
They are sedated: When someone is put on the ventilator, we usually keep him sedated, the level of sedation varies based on the underlying illness, but in most cases we keep it light so the person is able to open eyes and communicate, in certain cases, we need deep level of sedation and the patient would not be able to communicate. ...Read more

My mother went to the hospital to have fluid drained from her lungs is it comon for the drs to medically induce you in a coma?
Cases differ: It is unlikely that the only problem is just fluids on the lungs, there is more, and doctors deal with what they face at the time when they deal with a case. Your mother's condition warranted a specific measure according to the doctors' judgement at that moment, trust your doctors and their judgement they definitely want the best for your mother, wish you all the best ...Read more
If someone has a head injury and has been put into an induced coma, how long can that person remain in that state?
Depends on cause: Following head injury there can be seizures, brain swelling, severe agitation, broken bones, etc. Some patients are put into coma in order to allow healing of body parts, some for control of seizures, some for control of brain swelling, and some to assist nursing management. Monitoring of brain pressure and eeg may indicate the coma can be reversed, or healing of body parts may take longer. ...Read more
As long as needed:
The coma used in medical situations is due to risk of injury while fighting a ventilator, or supporting a dire condition.
When the medical situation is stable, sedation is reversed.
It is a preventive treatment to improve outcomes, but has risks in managing nutrition and loss of strength for the duration of bed rest. Ask questions of the doctors and nurses and maintain hope. ...Read more

How are people taken out of a medically induced coma? How long is the coma? And is family allowed to be in room when the coma is finished? Thank you.
As long as it needs: People put into medically induced comas are left in them as long as they need maximal brain rest. Depending on the reason, this may be hours or it can be weeks - in rare cases even longer. They are "taken out" by gradually reducing the medications used to induce the coma. This too can take hours, days or longer. They just don't stop them and the person "pops up" awake, so you really can't be there ...Read more
Hello. Someone has brain damage of some level and is put in a medically induced coma. Why and for how long? Is it to ease them into death peacefully?
How long does it take to wake from a medically induced coma? There may still be some infection after a septic shock episode.
Depends: Depends on how badly the organs have failed during the septic shock episode - particularly kidneys and liver that clear medicines from the body. So it may be immediate or delayed up to several days. If it doesn't happen when expected, further work-up is warranted to rule out a stroke or other problems that may have happened during the coma. ...Read more

Ask his doctors:
It is just not possible for someone who doesn't know the intimate details of the injury and his response to treatment to answer this question.
Guidelines exist to provide prognostic information in traumatic head injuries and his doctors can use such tools to give you some idea of what to expect and what hopes are reasonable. Young people often do remarkably well but each case is unique. ...Read more

Uncertain: Of your question. Most stroke patients don't progress to coma. Many patients with coma are not suffering this issue because of stroke. Bottom line, question is unanswerable. ...Read more

My friend is in coma since 1 week after cutting his threads when he wakes they say he will loose his memory, what will he forget? And for how long?
Hypothetically, you eat 3500 over BMR on Sun, go into a coma Monday, TPN at BMR 1 month. How long for that 3500 to appear as a pound of fat, typically?
Probably never: It's a good question with no good answer. Fortunately our bodies are not calculators and a one time indulgence even well over what's needed would probably not change anything except glycogen stores with a small weight gain initially. Habitual overeating causes weight gain over time and it is rarely 100% fat gain. Our metabolism constantly adjusts to try and maintain so there isn't one answer. ...Read more
