Been diagnosed with viral pleurisy. Been suffering for over a month, been on painkillers, cocodomol and antibiotics. How long does it usually last?

Not a proper diagnos: Viral pleurisy is not a definite diagnosis; so I would question that judgment. You need to have follow up to further investigate the cause of your chest pain, which will require blood counts(cbc), a chest x-ray for a start. If th epain is substantial, you may need additional x-rays/ scans as advised by your primary care doctor. You may need a second opinion and see a different doctor than the 1st. ...Read more

sometimes: I agree that's a long time. Have you stopped smoking 100% to allow full healing of your lungs and respiratory tract? Has fever resolved? Is your cough improved? If the answer to all 3 questions is "yes" — I'd give it more time. Otherwise, go back to your treating doc for another look. And please don't smoke anymore! ...Read more

Recov from pleurisy and pleural effusion. Sle pt. 2.5 months still have pain that goes into rt shoulder. Sed, CRP now norm. How long does pain last?

Your meds!: You are not on conventional steroids and not on hydroxychloroquine. Acthar is heinously expensive and as minor advantages. Certainly a NSAID pain med can help. Esr and CRP tests do not measure sle activity well. Post pleuritic pain can last several months, so don't despair. I might try you on a course of Cymbalta (duloxetine) until your pain improves! ...Read more

I was diagnosed with pleurisy 3 days ago. Rx for nabumetone. Feel very tired. Still, in pain. How long before I will feel better or should return to dr?

Pleurisy: Hello ~ were you told what was the CAUSE of the pleurisy. Pleurisy is more of a symptom than a diagnosis and pleurisy, (pain which comes from inflammation of the pleurae) or (linings of the lung) can have many causes and any answer must take that into account. As a base principle, if you are not getting better or worse, revisit the Dr. thx ...Read more

2yrs ago, I had pleurusy post pneumonia. The pain was very severe. Over the last month, I have had the same stabbing pains, but not as severe, nor have I been ill. Could it be pleurisy? What warning signs should I look for to say I need medical help?

Hard to tell: If you feel well otherwise (no fever, cough, or breathing problem), this is likely from inflammation on the chest cage. Is the pain relieved by ice pack, heating pad, or NSAID? If the pain is severe, you will need to see your doctor. ...Read more

Pleuritic pain: You should not have this persistently after recovery from pneumonia. I was prescribed Cefdinir and ketorolac for pain For pleurisy. How long before the cefdinir works? Pain is terrible and the pain meds aren't helping

Virus? Call doctor.: Pleurisy (inflammation around but not in the lung, with breathing pain) is due to viruses, which do not respond to any antibiotic. Your doc probably prescribed cefdinir as a precaution, and it may not help. Even if your pleurisy is bacterial, probably it will take several days for the antibiotic to improve symptoms. Sounds like you need better pain control meds. Discuss all this with your doctor. ...Read more
