How Long Can I Take Zyrtec
Is it safe to take zyrtec (cetirizine) most days of the year or is there a chance for long term problems with taking it too much? I try to avoid taking medicines.
Zyrtec (cetirizine) : Zyrtec is a safe anti-histamine with a relatively good tract record in long term users. But note that all medications have side effects. However, some are willing to take a small and smart risk for a better quality of life. Discuss nasal antihistamines & other non-systemic treatments with your doctor. With immunotherapy, an immunologist may be able to help avert your need for medications. ...Read more

Unlikely: While the "good" effect of zyrtec (cetirizine) will be gone in several days, there is no known problem of "rebound" or worsening symptoms when stopping oral antihistamines. More likely, is the continued exposure to the allergens. Here is where an allergist will be able to assist. ...Read more

Probably: Although the usual dose of zyrtec (cetirizine) for an adult is 10 mg daily, under the direction of a physician, some patients may need more. I accidentally took an expired (18 months ago!) Zyrtec pill. Should I take the correct (unexpired) one nowbad well or should I wait 24 hours?
Wait: Medication can lose it's effectiveness past expiration date, but I would not expect it to not be effective at all; especially if only 18 months expired. It will not be harmful at all that you took an expired zyrtec. It will probably still be almost as effective as it was prior to expiration, so I would just wait and take a new one at your normal time the next day. Hope this helps! ...Read more
