How Long Am I Contagious With The Flu After Taking Tamiflu
How long are you contagious with the flu after starting tamiflu (oseltamivir)? My husband is home sick with type a flu and I will not let him leave our room!
The brand name is tamiflu (oseltamivir). It is a prodrug, which means it is inactive until metabolized by a person's body into the active form. It blocks neuraminidase, an enzyme in influenza virus; by doing this, it prevents the flu virus from detaching from the host cell and slows the spread of the virus. It comes in a tablet form, as ...Read more
I got the flu and since monday night I have been taking tamiflu (oseltamivir). Am I still contagious? Am I ok to run errands as long as im cautious around others?
Take good precaution: It is hard to say if you are still contagious, maybe not. However it is never a bad idea to take good precautions such as washing hands, stop hand-shaking or hugging, cough in your arm. I don't think you need to quarantine yourself, it sounds like you are feeling pretty good to be running errands ...Read more

I have the flu and I'm currently on tamiflu (oseltamivir). I have a 5 year old and a 7 week old and I'm concerned for their health. Am I contagious?
I tested positive for the flu two days ago. I had a low-grade fever but have been fever free since yesterday morning while on tamiflu (oseltamivir). Am I still considered contagious?
My daughter has had the flu for a week now. Been on Tamiflu (oseltamivir) for 3 days. Temp normal since last night. Still has cold symptoms. She still contagious?
I got diagnosed with the flu on thurs I had symptoms on tues now I'm taking tamiflu (oseltamivir) how long do you think it will take to go away?
The Tamiflu (oseltamivir) will shorten the course of the flu, but it must be taken soon after the onset of symptoms.
You were just the at the border line for that.
Cont with the Tamiflu (oseltamivir) for the course.
Keep pushing fluids as much as possible.
Tylenol or Advil for pain and temp.
See your DR if worsening or high temp ...Read more
How long till I know whether my family is going to come down with the flu I was diagnosed with flu A & B on Tuesday and I have only ran a fever the very first day and no one else is showing signs or symptoms yet I have been on Tamiflu since Tuesday evenin
Helps some: This helps some patients if it is started soon enough. It works by decreasing viral reproduction, so if you have had it for more than 2 days, there is not much point in starting. (already well established) ...Read more
I would: Although you need to start them in the first 48hrs, these meds do reduce the replication of flu germs and for many make the illness more tolerable. For about 30% the meds will not help at all, due to drug resistence. If taken too late, there is less benefit if drug sensitive. ...Read more
If my husband && I both just got over the flu, should I get tamiflu (oseltamivir) for my 2 year old?
I have the flu but I need to go to class tomorrow. I'm on tamiflu (oseltamivir) but is there anything else I can do to help me feel more active and betterfaster?
Yes: There is no drug to prevent flu completely, even the vaccine. They decrease the severity of symptoms such body aches, malaise etc. Tamiflu (oseltamivir) helps better if you administer it atleast 48 hrs before the symptom onset. So if someone around you is sick, start taking it. The sooner the better. If you are pregnant, talk to your doctor first whether to take it or not coz there are conflicting data. ...Read more

I was wondering what would a doctor prescribe for the flu if it's too late for tamiflu (oseltamivir)?
Is this the beginning of the flu? It started y'day morning, but I do not have any fever? Can you have the gast. Flu and no fever? Should I start Tamiflu?
Requires exam: And testing: give this information to your physician or local UC clinic: you cannot be diagnosed online. I suggest immediate evaluation. ...Read more
I got sick with the flu on Saturday. It is now tuesday. I have taken 3 tamiflu (oseltamivir) capsules so far. When can I go near my 3 month old granddaughter?
Not yet: If your grand daughter's mother received a flu vaccine during pregnancy her baby may have partial protection. This year we are seeing a flu strain not in the current vaccine, however, so caution must be exercised in exposing a 3 month old baby. We cannot assume it is safe to expose her to you even after you have taken Tamiflu (oseltamivir). Best to wait until you have recovered completely. ...Read more
See dr if needed: If you have the Flu hydrate well w water, herbal teas, soup or juice. Drink sufficiently to have pale to light yellow urine. You can use pain relievers like Tylenol (acetaminophen) or NSAID’s. Rest A LOT! In some situations antiviral medications (Tamiflu, Relenza, Flumadine) may be prescribed within the first couple of days of symptoms to hasten healing or they can be used after flu exposure to prevent illness. ...Read more

My 2 year old grand daughter has the flu and is taking tamiflu (oseltamivir). Last night she threw up black gunk. What would cause this, and should we be concerned?
Don't Panic, Call Doc:
Did she have a nosebleed? Black gunk can be from old swallowed blood.
Was is something she ate? Like oreo's.
These questions and others from her doctor can help figure it out and ease your mind. Just give him/her a call. ...Read more
I've been diagnosed with the flu. Currently taking tamiflu (finished day 4) and ibuprofen 200 mg 2x daily. Fever is still 101, should I visit the ER?
Observe: If you do have the flu it should have been tested for and been positive the tamiflu (oseltamivir) does not work like an antibiotic it trims a day or so off the illness. You will still have fever etc If the fever gets worse, you feel worse, get short of breathe or start to develop colored sputum go to the er. It would not hurt to be seen now but the flu can have fevers for a week ...Read more
My sisters son has the flu should I allow her to come visit my 5 day old baby she has had no symptoms herself and has been taking tamiflu (oseltamivir)?
No: Mom can be a symptom free carrier while on Tamiflu (oseltamivir). While they shed less virus, they can still shed some. We lose more very young and very old to flu. I almost lost one last year and have lost pregnant moms. Although it is considered minor by some, I respect the flu a lot. The people that matter in your life should understand, the others don't matter. ...Read more
I'm on birth control. I got the flu and was taking Tamiflu (oseltamivir). I was not sick anymore had sex and comdom broke then took Plan B should I be ok?
Probably OK: What kind of birth control? Different formulations may be metabolized by the liver differently than others. Tamiflu (oseltamivir) does not affect the CYP450 liver enzyme family, which is good, because birth control hormones do. Tamiflu (oseltamivir) will not weaken efficacy of Plan B. ...Read more

How can you treat a fever on someone who has hepatitis C & the flu & is taking tamiflu, z pack, zutipro, klonopin, inderal, (propranolol) and remeron?
I have the flu, it's pretty intense. I cannot afford tamiflu (oseltamivir) at this time. Will that make a big difference in the duration of this virus?
Tamiflu (oseltamivir): Best taken within 24 hrs of onset of symptoms it will markedly reduce both severity and duration of illness. If you did not get vaccinated this year, please do so next fall when the new vaccine is released. ...Read more
I have the flu and was given tamiflu (oseltamivir). I took it for 2 days and was feeling better, until last night I started puking like crazy again and diahrrea?
See your doctor: Problems like these can only be correctly handled by your doctor in person. He/she needs to listen to you, perform an examination and possibly run labs or other tests. That's the only way he/she can find out what's going on and what to do about it. ...Read more
Help! My hubby just got the flu. Was just put on Tamiflu (oseltamivir). I'm worried that me and my 8month old are going to get it. Will Lysol really help? What else
Contact precautions: The virus has to physically get from him to you or your child for infection to occur. Have him cover any cough or sneeze. Wash hands frequently. Clean surfaces frequently. If he blows his nose in a tissue, treat it like toxic waste! I would strongly consider preemptive Tamiflu (oseltamivir) for you and your child. Yes, Lysol can help. Diluted Clorox also works. Consider putting him on bedroom "isolation" ...Read more
I am prescribed opana for pain but recently came down with the flu and was prescribed tamiflu, (oseltamivir) is it safe to take both? Just want to know if it is safe or not

My husband has the flu. He was tested yesterday. They prescribed Tamiflu for him. I just read about Tamiflu and it said it can reduce the chances of getting the flu. I was hoping I could get a prescription, because I don't want to get the flu.
Good idea!: This is a good idea, assuming your husband is believed to have type A influenza; Tamiflu (oseltamivir) doesn't work against type B. The best way to get a prescription probably is to ask your husband's doctor. If you have signed up for HealthTap's Concierge Service, perhaps a HealthTap doctor would be able to do it. Next year get vaccinated! Good luck. ...Read more
Yes: There shouldn't be a reason you can't take tamiflu (oseltamivir) while having/being treated for a dental abscess. You need to start tamiflu (oseltamivir) within 72 hours of symptoms to be effective so you may already be out of the window of it being useful. Double check any other meds you're on with your doctor to make sure there aren't any interactions with each other before starting any new med though. ...Read more
I have the flu. I am on tamiflu (oseltamivir) for 3 days. I started coughing a lot and my asthma is flaring up. Could flu lead to bronchitis?
Yes: Presumably you were tested and found positive (by nasal swab) for Influenza A or B, AND were within a day of the start of symptoms like high fever, cough, runny nose, achy body, etc. Asthma reactive airways can flare with any process inflaming the airways. Bronchitis is an 'itiis' of the upper larger airways (bronchi). So, yes. If your inhalers aren't helping, seek help. ...Read more
2yr old & 6mth old given tamiflu (oseltamivir) for the flu & Cheratussin but the 6mth old seems to be n pain can I give him tylnol pain meds ontop of meds they got?
Body aches are frequent symptoms of the flu and this maybe the reason the baby is cranky. If you are giving Acetaminophen (tylenol) to control the fever, this should help. I would stop giving the Cheratussin to both children. You can try Vicks vaporub sparingly on the 2-year-old's chest. Tamiflu (oseltamivir) maybe causing the irritability as well as a possible ear infection.
Get your 6 mo checked again. ...Read more
Unclear question: Do you mean that you need to do pcr genetic study on the strain of flu that may be affecting you? Tamiflu (oseltamivir) should be taken within the first couple of days of infection for it to be effective. If you wait for pcr results, you would have missed the appropriate time for treatment. ...Read more
