Oseltamivir (Definition)

The brand name is tamiflu (oseltamivir). It is a prodrug, which means it is inactive until metabolized by a person's body into the active form. It blocks neuraminidase, an enzyme in influenza virus; by doing this, it prevents the flu virus from detaching from the host cell and slows the spread of the virus. It comes in a tablet form, as ...Read more

I got the flu and since monday night I have been taking tamiflu (oseltamivir). Am I still contagious? Am I ok to run errands as long as im cautious around others?

Take good precaution: It is hard to say if you are still contagious, maybe not. However it is never a bad idea to take good precautions such as washing hands, stop hand-shaking or hugging, cough in your arm. I don't think you need to quarantine yourself, it sounds like you are feeling pretty good to be running errands ...Read more

How long does it take for the flu to not be contagious? Taking tamiflu since Thurs. Still have headaches and body aches. Am I still contagious?

Maybe contagious: Nobody really knows when one person stops being contagious with influenza (with or without Tamiflu treatment). One week out from the start of the illness (one can count from the first day of fever, aches, or cough) is safe, unless a person had a more severe illness or still has a lot of cough. In a more severe case, one can wait longer, such as until 3 days after no fever nor excessive cough. ...Read more

I got diagnosed with the flu on thurs I had symptoms on tues now I'm taking tamiflu (oseltamivir) how long do you think it will take to go away?

3-5 days: The Tamiflu (oseltamivir) will shorten the course of the flu, but it must be taken soon after the onset of symptoms.
You were just the at the border line for that.
Cont with the Tamiflu (oseltamivir) for the course.
Keep pushing fluids as much as possible.

Tylenol or Advil for pain and temp.
See your DR if worsening or high temp ...Read more

Got the flu and on tamiflu (oseltamivir). Fever 2 degrees above norm. How long will fever typically last? I did have my flu shot. Tx

Shortens duration: A flu shot may not have been the one for the strain of virus you have. Taking tamiflu (oseltamivir) before can ward of the flu, and if taken right away usually it shortens the duration of symptoms. Feel better! ...Read more

If you have been diagnosed with the flu and quickly take Tamiflu (within 24 hours) does your body still produce an immunity?

If you have been diagnosed with the flu and quickly take Tamiflu (within 24 hours) does your body still produce an immunity?

Yes: If a person would have produced immunity to a strain of influenza virus without taking Tamiflu, she should still produce immunity even while taking Tamiflu. That is because Tamiflu interferes with virus replication (reproduction) but does not stop all of the replication. There will still be influenza viruses in her body, but just fewer viruses than if she had not started Tamiflu early. ...Read more

How is tamiflu (oseltamivir) for the flu?

How is tamiflu (oseltamivir) for the flu?

I got flu at the start of January and had Tamiflu. I got better from the flu but since then I continue to have a cold. Why can I not recover?

Rest & diet: Get adequate daily rest and fluids (water & juice) & a good diet consisting of a lot of fruit & veggies & do not drink alcohol, smoke or use illicit drugs. And take a multivitamin & extra vitamin C supplement daily. Garlic supplements may also help. To make certain you do not have a lingering serious infection in your lungs or elsewhere please go to a clinic for a general exam! ...Read more

My son has the flu, day 6. He was told to take tamiflu and given script for his wife. Also told if we had been exposed to him, we should take it. I?

Common practice: The common practice is to prescribe a full 2Xdaily course of Tamiflu (5d) for those with flu. For family contacts a 1X daily (10) course is given but increased to 2Xdaily if symptoms emerge. Flu is spread by saliva or droplets in the air. Tamiflu is one of the few things we have that can blunt/prevent it. ...Read more

Should you take antivirals such as tamiflu/relenza if you have the flu & asthma?

I would: Although you need to start them in the first 48hrs, these meds do reduce the replication of flu germs and for many make the illness more tolerable. For about 30% the meds will not help at all, due to drug resistence. If taken too late, there is less benefit if drug sensitive. ...Read more

If my husband && I both just got over the flu, should I get tamiflu (oseltamivir) for my 2 year old?

No: Tamiflu (oseltamivir) per the cdc should be used in people with documented flu who have other serious health problems to help them get over the flu. It does not prevent the flu and when used makes a 7 day illness 6 to 6.5 days so really not much benefit. ...Read more

I have the flu but I need to go to class tomorrow. I'm on tamiflu (oseltamivir) but is there anything else I can do to help me feel more active and betterfaster?

Stay home: Unless you are happy about giving this disease to anyone coming in contact with you, sit this one out. You shed flu virus heavily in the week after symptoms start. For some it is a minor problem, but people old/young/middle aged die every year from complications. ...Read more

Is tamiflu (oseltamivir) a good drug to prevent the flu?

Yes: There is no drug to prevent flu completely, even the vaccine. They decrease the severity of symptoms such body aches, malaise etc. Tamiflu (oseltamivir) helps better if you administer it atleast 48 hrs before the symptom onset. So if someone around you is sick, start taking it. The sooner the better. If you are pregnant, talk to your doctor first whether to take it or not coz there are conflicting data. ...Read more

I'm tested positive for the flu today (I taken the flu shot, so I have a milder)My doc said I don’t need tamiflu b/c my symptoms are not severe. Normal?

Reasonable: Flu usually starts with a high intensity & if your symptoms are mild this sounds reasonable. Also the Tamiflu is not helpful if you have had any symptoms for 48 hours or more. It's not really an antibiotic & must be taken very early to do any good. Even with a co-pay many end up paying big bucks for 5 days worth of this drug. ...Read more

I got sick with the flu on Saturday. It is now tuesday. I have taken 3 tamiflu (oseltamivir) capsules so far. When can I go near my 3 month old granddaughter?

Not yet: If your grand daughter's mother received a flu vaccine during pregnancy her baby may have partial protection. This year we are seeing a flu strain not in the current vaccine, however, so caution must be exercised in exposing a 3 month old baby. We cannot assume it is safe to expose her to you even after you have taken Tamiflu (oseltamivir). Best to wait until you have recovered completely. ...Read more

6 week old in home, plus 6, 8, 10 year olds. If someone gets a confirmed case of the flu, should everyone except baby be given tamiflu prophylaxis to keep the baby safe?

Family vaccinations: Because everyone ages 6 months and above has been vaccinated (with only rare exceptions), we don't have to worry too much if one or two family members catch the flu, because his or her flu illness should be milder than without the vaccine (unless he or she has really bad luck). Tamiflu might not be needed in such a family. Children have lots of germs and so don't need to interact with new babies. ...Read more

See dr if needed: If you have the Flu hydrate well w water, herbal teas, soup or juice. Drink sufficiently to have pale to light yellow urine. You can use pain relievers like Tylenol (acetaminophen) or NSAID’s. Rest A LOT! In some situations antiviral medications (Tamiflu, Relenza, Flumadine) may be prescribed within the first couple of days of symptoms to hasten healing or they can be used after flu exposure to prevent illness. ...Read more

Observe: If you do have the flu it should have been tested for and been positive the tamiflu (oseltamivir) does not work like an antibiotic it trims a day or so off the illness. You will still have fever etc If the fever gets worse, you feel worse, get short of breathe or start to develop colored sputum go to the er. My sisters son has the flu should I allow her to come visit my 5 day old baby she has had no symptoms herself and has been taking tamiflu (oseltamivir)?

No: Mom can be a symptom free carrier while on Tamiflu (oseltamivir). While they shed less virus, they can still shed some. We lose more very young and very old to flu. I almost lost one last year and have lost pregnant moms. Although it is considered minor by some, I respect the flu a lot. I'm on birth control. I got the flu and was taking Tamiflu (oseltamivir). I was not sick anymore had sex and comdom broke then took Plan B should I be ok?

Probably OK: What kind of birth control? Different formulations may be metabolized by the liver differently than others. Tamiflu (oseltamivir) does not affect the CYP450 liver enzyme family, which is good, because birth control hormones do. Tamiflu (oseltamivir) will not weaken efficacy of Plan B. ...Read more

Have the flu. Just noticed blood in my stool. It's red, not black. Been taking lots of acetaminophen and ibuprofen. Also took tamiflu (oseltamivir).

Red in stool: This is likely a hemorrhoid. Soften the stools with colace (docusate sodium) 100 mg two times a day and use a teaspoon of mineral oil three to four times a day. This should help. You should have this checked by a gastrointestinal specialist. Good luck. ...Read more

Help! My hubby just got the flu. Was just put on Tamiflu (oseltamivir). I'm worried that me and my 8month old are going to get it. Will Lysol really help? What else

Contact precautions: The virus has to physically get from him to you or your child for infection to occur. Have him cover any cough or sneeze. Wash hands frequently. Clean surfaces frequently. If he blows his nose in a tissue, treat it like toxic waste! I would strongly consider preemptive Tamiflu (oseltamivir) for you and your child. Yes, Lysol can help. Diluted Clorox also works.
