How long after eating something do you get diarrhea?

How long after eating something do you get diarrhea?

Depends: From a few hours to several days, depending on the cause. Diarrhea resulting from bacterial toxins (e.g. Staph, bacillus cereus) starts in a few hours, whereas diarrhea from salmonella, shigella and campylobacter takes longer, because the organism have to replicate first. You can never blame the last food you ate (or sue the last restaurant you ate at) for diarrhea.

Gastric reflux: You are probably having reflux (backing up) of stomach acid into your food pipe (esophagus) which is causing the belching. It is happening right after eating because stomach acid production starts with food entering the stomach. You need to try medications like Maalox, Mylanta, Pepcid (famotidine) AC, Prilosec OTC which can help symptoms. You also need to stay upright at least 45 minutes after eating.

Many: Ibs, inflamatory bowel disease, infections, side effects of meds especially some meds like antibiotics and some otc supplements. Just to name a few. You need labs, stool sample and probably a colonoscopy.

See a GI doctor: This could be one of several things, including infection, IBS, non-infectious inflammation, etc. In order to evaluate would need more history and an exam and the GI doctor may well want a colonoscopy. Go and be assessed professionally. Best wishes.

Gallbladder: Many potential causes, including irritable bowel syndrome, gallstones, ulcer disease. Having a problem with the gallbladder is among the more common. I would not hesitate to be seen and evaluated for an accurate diagnosis.

Recently, I had two occasions where after eating beans I either had loose stools and/or vomiting. Is this an allergic reaction or food poisoning?

Aller allerg: The title wouldn't let me type in allergic. You are likely having an anaphylactic reaction to beans and need to avoid them. One need to rule out peanut allergy as well and you need to consider having epinephrine autoinjector at all times in case of accidental exposure to beans. Consult an allergist since you likely have nasal and/or respiratory allergies as well.

I hav barretts oesophagus & vomit a lot, bile acid malabsorption with loose stools recently been getting a fever after eating a meal what cud this be?

Fever: Your fevers are nonspecific and not clearly related to the barretts or malabsorption syndrome as neither of these conditions are usually accompanied by post prandial fever. Are other symptoms like abdominal pain, sweats and chills or cough also occurring then? Infection or noninfectious inflammation are to be considered. See your MD for further evaluation and testing.

Diarrhea: When red meat is not cooked properly or is kept in the refrigerated condition for a long time, the possibility of diarrhea increases manifold. Consumption of red meat that is infected with a bacterium called Escherichia coli is one of the most common causes of food poisoning. Maybe he should get a stool culture. Keep him well hydrated and if there is fever, and diarrhea continues go to the ER.

Contraction like cramps after food intake, yellow diarrhea stool for 2yrs which smells extremely like vomit. What could it be?

IBD: With that long a history of these symptoms, you need to have an examination and some stool studies, blood tests, and a colonoscopy at the very least to determine the reason for your symptoms. I would be suspicious of an Inflammatory Bowel Disease like Crohn's or Ulcerative Colitis but could also be a chronic infection or irritable bowel disease. Get checked!!!

Uncertain: The benefit, and the dose, and the effect of food, are all speculative. If you have persistent loose stools, swallowing some yeast is not likely to help. To correct the condition requires that you first define the cause. You will need professional help for that. Many episodes of loose stools are brief and self contained. If that occurs in your case, be grateful it is gone and do not experiment wit

Colitis: This may be irritable bowel syndrome, gluten intolerance or intestinal infection. A stool sample should be sent for culture for pathogens as well as ova and parasites. An antispasmodic medication like bentyl (dicyclomine) can be prescribed. Before meals if you have irritable bowel syndrome. A gastroenterologist is best qualified to evaluate and treat you if symptoms persist.
