Is the barium enema exam of the large intestine safe for heart patients?

Compared to what? Ca: Cancer? Any procedure or test comes with risk, so if it isn't needed, then best not to do it. However, whoever ordered the Barium enema did so for a reason & the risk-vs-benefit calculation was done based on symptoms, history, & a preliminary diagnosis. All-in-all, barium is safer than colonoscopy using Mag citrate or other laxatives that cause electrolyte problems & require sedation. Enema is OK. ...Read more

Constipation: You may have a slow colon. This can result from chronic usage of senna or cascara compounds or other causes like thyroid disorders or diabetes. To find this out you can do an X-ray test called colonic sitzmarker testing or a Smartpill. If the colon is slow, you will likely need prescription medications like miralax, lactulose plus amitiza (lubiprostone) or linzess. I'd recommend the testing first. ...Read more

Hello. : Hello. It is not normal to go 15 days without having a bowel movement. I suspect your mother is worried about this. Will you be giving yourself the enema or will your mother be giving it to you? Have you required enemas in the past? If so, do you struggle, when the enema is given? Are you and your mother angry and arguing with each other? Are you afraid of the enema or do you just not want to have it? If a person struggles when an object is introduced into the anus it could cause pain or sometimes an injury. That is why I am asking about people's anger levels. It is best to do this type of thing when people are calm. I suggest that you might want to show this question and answer to your mother. I recommend that you and your mother talk to your pediatrician. He or she knows your medical history the best and knows what the appropriate treatment options are. It sounds like you aren't willing to do your part, if you aren't willing to eat healthier foods. Maybe you could compromise on this issue, so that you don't ever have to go 15 days without a bowel movement. I can't answer if your mom is right in making you take an enema. She may feel that she has no other choice due to your obstipation. It is essential that if an enema is performed, that both parties are calm. If you and your mother have not had a discussion with your doctor about use of enemas, then you probably should. ...Read more

I had an enema ystrday due to consitipation and 5 minutes later i had a bm. When should my normal bowel movement occur? 24hrs later?

Difficult to say: Unless your constipation was mostly related to a fecal(poop) impaction which your enema may have relieved, it may not readily normalize bowel wise until the underlying cause of your constipation is addressed. Unfortunately I can't readily determine the cause without more history. I would encourage you to stay hydrated, keep up your fiber intake, remain active. Priobiotics may be an option. ...Read more
