The blood sugar concentration or blood glucose level is the amount of glucose (sugar) present in the blood of a human or animal. The body naturally tightly regulates blood glucose levels as a part of metabolic homeostasis. Glucose is the primary source of energy for the body's cells, and blood lipids (in the form of fats and oils) are primarily ...Read more

A1c: If Dad is not taking any insulin he is doing just fine. On the assumption that he is not taking and medicine for diabetes he is OK. If he is on medication for diabetes he should slow down his meds by 50%. PS: If anything, Dad is not a "diabetic". That is a silly term. In type 2 diabetes the theme is "I have diabetes" and the end result is "I am going to beat it!" ...Read more

Diet for weight loss: It sounds like you did a glucose tolerance test, measuring Insulin as well as glucose levels. Unfortunately, this is not an accurate way of trying to diagnose Insulin resistance. Based on your history, i suspect you are significantly overweight. I agree that the most effective diet to help with weight loss is a low carb diet, regardless of your blood sugar. ...Read more

It depends.: A "normal sugar" is defined as 70 and 99 mg/dL. Since you have diabetes there are diff goals at diff times of the day & based on your health. For an otherwise healthy male with DM fasting BS (by the ADA) should be 80-130 & 1-2 hours after a meal 80-180 mg/dl. In the am I ideally say 80 to 110 or 120, premeal I use the same, 1 hour post meal < 180 & 2 hrs < 160 & ideally < 140. Avoiding low sugars! ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
