Biopsy (Definition)

Biopsy is tissue removed by needle or cutting to remove part of a body part. It is usually a small amount of material that is processed by a pathologist. Most of the time it is stained and looked at through a microscope to arrive at a diagnosis. Special processes are done for some tissues or problems. 5 days ago i had an ovarian cyst removed...Biopsy results are not available yet. Hypoglycemia is out of control. Thoughts?

5 days ago i had an ovarian cyst removed...Biopsy results are not available yet. Hypoglycemia is out of control. Thoughts?

No: In my 35 years of practice, I have never seen a case of reactive hypoglycemia. The disorder doesn't exist, if you're overweight the symptoms are a natural response to your glucose level returning to normal. A glucose tolerance test (if you've had one) is not and never will be a valid diagnostic test for hypoglycemia. Don't waste your money o GTT or any fad diets of treatments. Lose wt if heavy. ...Read more

Should a GYN do a biopsy to diagnose endometriosis? My Dr didn't do a biopsy and I'm concerned my symptoms are ovarian cancer.

Clarify plan: In order to do a biopsy to confirm Endometriosis your doctor will need to perform a surgery to allow entry into your abdominal cavity. This is called a laparoscopy. An endometrial biopsy can be done in the office but this samples the lining of the uterus and is not form endometriosis. I have had my period 3 times in the last 6 weeks is this normal? Had biopsy 6 months ago for ovarian cancer. Is this related maybe?

Irergular periods : Irregular periods are one of the most common problems obgyns treat. If this is one time problem it usually resolves on its own. If this is a recurring problem you should be evaluated. There are many options available to help regulate the menstrual cycle. This is not related to a biopsy. Are you sure it was to rule out ovarian cancer? That does not sound right. ...Read more

If ovarian cancer suspect and ovary & lymph removed. Is biopsy done during surgery and how long til results? Will lymph biopsy results be done first?

Frozen section,,,: What is done during surgery for this or other operations for malignancy is usually a frozen section, not a biopsy. This is taken so the doctors know if there is tumor or if they got all the tumor if there is one. The results are reported at that time but it is preliminary. The official result comes after surgical dissection and examination and takes 2-3 days. Then the dr. Tells the pt. ...Read more

There : There are many things to consider here. One is your age, also do you have children? What was your doctor's recommendation? Have you seen a gyn/oncologist? If not you should do so for a different opinion/perspective. Honestly i can't make a recommendation based on the limited info. I have, therefore i encourage you to get a second opinion. I hope other doctor's here on avvo.Com can lend their opinion as well. Good luck. ...Read more

Ok: If it is a benign cyst please do not worry. Most systems are benign however in a 64-year-old woman there is a small chance of malignancy. The pathologist will review the tissue and make a biopsy report after the surgery to ensure that it is benign. ...Read more

It'll stay: Scar contracts and this is why you will have this little mark. This is common and depending on the site can be the norm. At surgery or autopsy, old biopsy sites can often be identified. It this truly bothers you and your friends, you can ask a plastic surgeon or dermatologist about a filler. I suspect instead that you're simply curious about healing -- that's a good thing. Cheers. ...Read more
