How Is Adult Adhd Diagnosed
How are adults diagnosed with adhd? Do adults have the same testing to diagnose ADHD as children, or is the process different?
Attention deficit disorder with or without hyperactivity begins in childhood and may continue through adulthood. Symptoms are similar: poor attention span, impulsivity and hyperactivity which is disruptive to others. Adults who present for a diagnosis must meet criteria for ADD in childhood which a careful history will support. Medical causes for symptoms ...Read more
Psychiatry: Most psychiatrists & many family doctors are able to diagnose and treat adhd in adults. It is best to ask specifically about the doctor's experience when making an appointment. Neurologists also treat as do nurse practitioners in many states. The experience of the practitioner is important. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Testing and clinical: Testing is one way to go. It is expensive and hard to find a place to do it. For psychiatrists with experience in diagnosing add/adhd, a targeted interview investigating key symptoms, will give you a diagnosis in one hour. You can discuss also the treatment options at that time. Add in adults is widely prevalent, but it depends on the daily routine and job demands to become an obvious problem. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Is there a way to diagnose adult ADHD using an old (3 months) fmri? The scan was originally performed for truth verification and i'm newly diagnosed.
Can my pcp diagnose adult adhd? I took a quiz for parents to assess there child for adhd. My 8yr old acts exactly like me. I see myself at her age.
Expert Assessment: Pcps do diagnose adhd. But diagnosing adhd requires assessing symptoms & their history and ruling out other disorders. You see adhd behavioral symptoms overlap widely w/those of other disorders -e.g., anxiety, depression, learning disabilities, etc. Also, someone may be diagnosed wadhd & other disorder(s). See psychiatrist or clinical psychologist 4 good assessment. We spend yrs training 4 this. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Is it possible to be diagnosed with p.T.S.D and adult adhd? Even though I have never been diagnosed with adhd?
YES, and...: Agree w/drs. Fowler & zimmerman. Just adding: sometimes adhd is missed in childhood b/c the person works hard to compensate for/hide symptoms. Onset of another illness (eg ptsd, depression, etc.) on top of baseline adhd then makes it even harder to compensate for pre-existing adhd, so the 2nd disorder comes w/its own symptoms, while also unmasking the hidden adhd & both diagnoses become apparent. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Yes : Adult adhd is misleading term. You do not develop this as an adult. By definition the symptoms of add/adhd are present before the age of 7. The diagnosis can be missed and it sounds like this is the case for your father. The same would apply to you. You could have a missed diagnosis but you would not develop it now. If you are concerned speak with provider. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Can i take cold meds with 140mg of vyvanse? Was diagnosed with adult ADHD almost 2 years ago. I have been taking Vyvanse 70 mgs the whole time i've been treating my adhd. I started at the lowest dosage and have been taking 70mg once daily for about a year
Two questions: How did you get to 140 mg a day of vyvanse? That's a lot and a big jump from 70 mg. Some cold medicines also have stimulant-like medications in them. Check with your doctor or look on line for interactions between your favorite cold medicine and vyvanse. Also, seriously relook at what vyvanse is doing; if you need that much, it may not be the best drug for you. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
