Possibly too high: You can try ibuprofen as well but if temperature not responding to over counter medications then you may have infection that requires antibiotics. Don't waste a lot more time to see if it comes down. ...Read more

Splenectomy in june.Told when sick if i had a fever to immediately go to the dr. How high of a temp and why is it so important to go immediately?

No spleen: You need a lower threshold to see a dr because persons without a spleen are more predisposed to certain bacterial infections ( particularly encapsulated ones). Most say a temperature over 100.4f is worthy of a check over by your dr or an urgent care--next time you see him/her, clarify. Also, be sure you got your pneumonia shot (probably before hospital discharge). ...Read more

The emergency doctor said my baby has asthma, and now she is having more trouble breathing. How do I know when I should take her back to the hospital?

Asthma should not...: Be treated in an emergency room unless absolutely necessary. A good rule of thumb is always to see your own doctor the day after an emergency room visit; the important treatment is what you do to keep attacks from coming back. Trouble breathing is a sign of out-of-control asthma (or something that looks like asthma but isn't), and may need an ED visit now, but an ED visit does not cure asthma. ...Read more

Can my child get allergy testing done if he is sick and has a fever? I need to know if I should take him to his apt this morning with a fever. Will they do the testing?

Postpone: If he is ill, then it would be best to reschedule so that he feels well at the start of testing. There is a blood test panel called a CAP allergy test which can be performed as well. The panel should be selected to include any potential triggering agent based on his history. ...Read more

Do I need to call the doctor if I have bleeding after my baby is born?

Do I need to call the doctor if I have bleeding after my baby is born?

If it's a lot, yes: Bleeding after delivering a baby is normal. Moms who deliver in the hospital will usually have their blood count checked the day after delivery to make sure they have not lost too much blood. If, however, you pass a blood clot the size of a grapefruit or larger, or if bleeding is copious, or if you feel ill, contact your doctor. ...Read more

What do you suggest if my child is 15, we went to the doctor and her BP was 140/56. is this ok?

High blood pressure: This is a very high reading for anyone, particularly a 15 year old child. The top number (systolic) should be 120 or less. If your child was nervous about being in the office, this could have elevated the blood pressure - the doctor might want to repeat it again in a few weeks. If she is overweight, this would be a good time to adopt healthy eating and exercise. ...Read more
