Needs evaluation.: Your episode merits a careful cardiovascular examination, including a careful history, physical exam, including a check of your blood pressure, sitting and standing. If that proves normal, then a stress test and 24 hour (or longer) holter monitor test should be considered. If you have a heart murmur, then an echocardiogram would be included among the tests. ...Read more

How can I get my endurance up for running? I can run a 1/2 mile straight now but I want to be able to run 3 miles easy by next month. Can I do this?

How can I get my endurance up for running? I can run a 1/2 mile straight now but I want to be able to run 3 miles easy by next month. Can I do this?

Yes: A healthy 17 yo should be able to run 3 miles. Run at least every other day. Increase the distance by 1/ 2 mile every 2 or 3 runs. When you increase to a mile don't expect to run at the same pace you run 1/2 mile- slow and steady is the way to go. As you get used to longer distances then you can gradually pick up the pace. Good luck! ...Read more

My friend has really bad shin splints. She used to run 3 miles, now she can't even run 1. What should she do?

Bio mechanical exam: Shin splints usually have a biomechanical / overuse etiology. If she cannot account for the onset (old running shoes, increased pace, different terrain, other medical problems, etc...). Then I would suggest seeing either a sports medicine orthopedic or a podiatrist. They should be able to determine why she is getting shin splints and the best treatment for them.
Good luck. ...Read more

If you run 3 miles every day for 1 month how much wieght could you lose?

If you run 3 miles every day for 1 month how much wieght could you lose?

Hard to say: It depends on how vigorous was the running and high steep the incline. It also depends on how much you are eating. On the whole, I would think that you will lose a lot of weight. Do note however that running 3 miles daily for a month may not be good for your health or body. Doing it on alternate day may be a better solution even though you may not lose weight as rapidly. ...Read more

Hard to say: Unfortunately, it is hard to say for certain without being able to ask you more questions. But my first thought would be that you pulled a muscle between your ribs. See your ortho doc: Decrease mileage and make sure you stretch and warm up. Use ice on painful area. Get a physical exam to diagnose exact cause of your pain. IT Band Syndrome is very common in runners, you can learn stretches to avoid this pain. Rest and work on flexibility and strength + see your sports medicine doc to treat bursitis given your bleeding risk. Exercise every day. See link:
