I am 25 years. I weigh 224 an I am thinking about doing a gastric bypass to lose weight. Do u think that's a good choice for me?

Gastric bypass: That depends on your height. If you are 5'3" and have no medical problems, you would qualify. If you are 5'7" and have medical problems like diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, asthma, gerd, etc., you would also still qualify. It is all dependent on your body mass index (bmi). You need a bmi greater than 40 if healthy, or greater than 35 if you have medical problems. ...Read more

I am HIV positive i weigh 240 pounds I am trying to lose weight what do you recommend i need something that is safe what about gastric bypass?

HIV ; gastric bypass: I would need to know your height but assuming your bmi qualifies for weight loss surgery, and operation could definitely be beneficial to you. I can't tell you which operation is best without doing a consultation with you, but I have done gastric bypasses on hiv+ patients before and they have done fine. ...Read more

My doctor put me on belviq (lorcaserin) to help me lose weight I'm 320 and want to get to 150 will this work? How does it work? Is it better than gastric bypass?

Belviq (lorcaserin): Belviq (lorcaserin) works with serotonin to make you feel full. As compared to gastric bypass it would probably be safer as gastric bypass is permanent and has its own set of problems and difficulties . Try the Belviq (lorcaserin) if it doesn't work you can allways talk other options with your Dr Good Luck ...Read more

Are hernias & weight loss related? My boss had one after gastric bypass. I am doing ww to lose weight. I have a hiatal hernia too. Had lost a lot b4.

Anatomy: I do not get the question and am trying to understand it from your point of view. Being obese or significantly over weight increases the likelihood of all kinds of hernias. But, a hiatal hernia is very different than an umbilical or abdominal wall hernia. I see no connection between any kind of hernia and the ability to lose weight. ...Read more

How can I stop losing weight after gastric bypass surgery?

How can I stop losing weight after gastric bypass surgery?

Stop weight loss: Usually, weight loss tapers off and stops around a year to a year and a half after bypass surgery. If you are under a year out from surgery, i wouldn't worry about it. If you are several years out, make sure you eat enough food everyday. Some surgeons bypass too much of your intestinal tract and that can cause excessive weight loss. That can be fixed surgically. ...Read more

Do gastric sleeve or gastric bypass work better for losing weight?

Both similar: The sleeve and bypass work in almost all patients. Our experience is to expect about an 80% excess body weight loss with the bypass and 70% with the sleeve. So if you weigh 250 and you are supposed to weigh 150, then you have an excess weight of 100 lbs. Most patients make their decision based on side effects or risks. Both are great. ...Read more

Is the mini gastric bypass (no surgery) from roca labs usa any good? I have dieted, exercised, and starved myself i need to lose weight and this seems like it would help.

Unfortunately : Unfortunately I am unable to provide you with an answer. This question is best handled by a general surgeon who specializes in bariatric surgery, rather than by a vascular surgeon. If it's true that patient stops losing weight after one year of gastric bypass surgery, can she still lose weight with diet and simple sports?

If it's true that patient stops losing weight after one year of gastric bypass surgery, can she still lose weight with diet and simple sports?

Yes: Diet and exercise are the mainstay for weight loss. As long as the balance of calories in vs calories out is negative, then there will be weight loss. A gastric bypass surgery is only a tool to jumpstart a weight loss program. Any tool can be beaten. Continue for a lifetime with prudent, low-carb diet and daily exercise for ongoing weight loss and weight maintenance. ...Read more

I had gastric bypass but didn't follow diet and am now almost back to my before weight. Help.

Wt gain after bypass: You need to get re-engaged with your weight loss program where you had surgery (assuming they offer a support program). Patients who attend support groups are more successful than those who do not attend. There may also be an anatomical reason why you have gained weight like an enlarged gastric pouch, an enlarged anastomosis, or both, which can be corrected with revisional surgery. ...Read more
