Cetirizine (Zyrtec): Cetirizine (generic zyrtec), 2nd generation, minimally sedating type 1 antihistamine, one 10 mg tab at bedtime is most likely to be effective. If the hives persist add ranitidine (generic zantac), a type 2 antihistamine, 150 mg twice a day should be tried as 20% of skin histamine receptors are type 2 receptors, so blocking type 1 & 2 receptors increases effectiveness.
