How Does Thyroxine Affect Metabolism
How can I speed up my metabolism when I don't have a thyroid? Do I have a metabolism? I'm taking Armour Thyroid and levoxyl (thyroxine). I'm eating right and walking everday but I can't seem to lose weight.
Increase exercise: You may benefit from simply exercising a little bit longer or at a higher intesity. Consider a pedometer to help you keep a consistent track of how active you are. ...Read more

Thyroid forever: If you have acquired hypothyroidism you can never naturally regain your ability to manufacture naturally the thyroid hormone. This may be the most common medical diagnosis in american medicine. And, it means that you will need to take a daily thyroid replacement for as long as you live. ...Read more

I take 50 mg of levothyroxine but my weight creeping up and up even with diet and excercise. Do I need to take more dose to higher my metabolism?
No: Your dose of thyroid medication should be adjusted based on your lab tests. Your weight may or may not be related to your thyroid level. To loose weight you will need to burn off more calories than you take in. Take a close look at your activity level and total calorie intake. A good start is to keep intake below 1500 calories ...Read more
I have a sluggish metabolism. I am hypothyroid. I am on levothyroxine at 112mg. Would a drink containing tamarind pulp be of benefit to me?
Does 25mcg of levothyroxine raise one's metabolism? I'm taking it to treat my hypo (which it does). But I'm hoping it'll speed up weight loss? ?
Very unlikely: Synthroid is giving you levothyroxine, a naturally occurring compound that the thyroid normally makes. It is remotely possible (< 1% chance) that the headache could be due to a reaction to the dye in the pills. If so, then switching to 50 mcg pills (may need more than 1 per day) would eliminate the headaches. ...Read more
If I have been using Synthroid (thyroxine) for years and it isn't working, should I ask about armour or something not synthetic?
There is: No such thing as Synthroid (thyroxine) "not working". If you take the proper dose to keep your levels normal, it's working. If you have other problems, they are not due to your hypothyroidism. Synthroid (thyroxine) is an exact duplicate of what your own thyroid makes. Armour thyroid is ground up pig glands that are not standardized, not testable by routine lab and dangerous. ...Read more

Possible: Levothyroxine (t4) has a long 1/2 life (up to 10 days in new hypothyroidism) so it is possible to dose a higher dose less often (e.g. 100mcg every other day). The problem we run into is compliance issues: many patients tend to forget to take their pills unless it is given once daily. ...Read more

I'm on 100mc Synthroid (thyroxine) my th levels are normal but it seems I still can't make it through the day?
Define normal: There is a lot of controversy about what exactly constitutes "normal" thyroid labs. If the TSH is between 0.5 and 2.5, I agree that it is time to look for for other causes. If above or below this, adjusting the thyroid dose to tweak the TSH into this range may improve your symptoms. ...Read more
My dr priscribed me 37.5mcg thyroxine dose. I don't want cut 75mcgpill so can I take 75mcg pill every second day for same result?
Yes: Thyroid hormone has a very long "half-life". It will make no difference taking 75 mcg very other day vs 1/2 pill every day. However, a dose of 37.5 mcg daily is a very small dose for someone in your age group. If 75 mcg was too high a dose, you could be on 50 mcg as the next step down. ...Read more
Fnp wants to raise my Synthroid (thyroxine) from 50 mcg to 75. I don't understand the mechanics behind this medicine. Can you explain?
TSH: Hi. Your FNP probably tested your TSH and found it to be high on your current dose of 50 mcg/day. TSH is the pituitary hormone that reflects thyroid status (assuming normal pituitary function); if TSH is hi, your pituitary is trying to push your thyroid to make more thyroid hormone, but your thyroid is damaged and can't. Therefore, you give more Synthroid (thyroxine) until the TSH is down in the normal range ...Read more

I haven't taken my Synthroid (thyroxine) in about a month. Since that month I have gained 25lbs. Is it because I'm off my synthroid (thyroxine)?
Probably two reasons: If you have been prescribed synthroid or levothyroxine replacement therapy, then your body likely needs thyroid hormone therapy to maintain normal thyroid levels. When you stop synthroid, and the thyroid levels become very low, you can then gain weight from two major factors: fluid retention, and slowed metabolism. Please check with your doctor to discuss what dose of synthroid you should restart. ...Read more
I started synthroid (thyroxine) 25 mcg 2.5 wks ago for hypo. The last few days, I've felt very full (almost sick) when I don't eat much. Is this related? Why?
Insulin is digested: Thyroxine is a small molecule similar to an aminoacid and it gets absorbed intact from the gut. When circulating it then behaves like naturally produced thyroxine. Insulin is a protein digested/broken down into dipeptides and aminoacids. Obviously once broken down and absorbed into the bloodstream it no longer exists as the intact molecule which is needed for its hormonal function. ...Read more
Go to your doctor: Cytomel (liothyronine) is mainly for supplementation of your t3, which is way more potent than your T4 and is the end product of your t4. It is best to have your level checked and medicine adjusted. ...Read more

I have hashimotos and can't seem to lose weight. I am on synthroid (thyroxine). I tried diet. Exercise. Everything! Nothing works. I lose 5 pounds that's it. Help?!
If you are: Biochemically euthyroid (meaning your blood work shows normal thyroid levels), you should calculate your basal energy expenditure (bee) and subtract 500kcal from that number to have a goal number of calories to eat per day. If that does not work, you could also discuss with your doctor the possibility of converting to t4/t3 combination replacement. ...Read more
