How does the urinary sphincter work exactly?

How does the urinary sphincter work exactly?

A muscle contraction: When muscles contract they shorten. In the sphincter, the muscles are laid in a circular fashion around the opening that passes urine at the base of the baldder. When they contract, they shorten, thereby tightening the opening in the middle and shutting flow. The sphincter is under the control of both voluntary and involuntary nervous systems. That explains incontinence when someone is very scared. ...Read more

Is the internal sphincter hypertonicity the more common problem (than the external u s) in bladder sphincter dissynergy ? Ie urinary hesitation ?

Is the internal sphincter hypertonicity the more common problem (than the external u s) in bladder sphincter dissynergy ? Ie urinary hesitation ?

Inner sphincter: The term 'overactive bladder' is used to describe dis synergy of the bladder muscle -not contracting in coordinated fashion; this leads to loss of regularity and coordinated, controlled urination. The inner sphincter is controlled by the autonomic nervous system and is involuntary. The outer sphincter is part of the voluntary nervous system, and we can control it (the basis of kegel exercises). ...Read more

Could rapaflow (silodosin) alpha-1 blockers affect urinary sphincter or just the prostate?

Could rapaflow (silodosin) alpha-1 blockers affect urinary sphincter or just the prostate?

Both: Alpha blockers relax the smooth muscle component of the prostate (as opposed to the glandular part). They also relax the INTERNAL urinary sphincter at the neck of the bladder. This is why retrograde ejaculation(the ejaculate goes into the bladder instead of coming out) can occur. They do not relax the EXTERNAL sphincter(below the prostate) which controls urine voluntarily. ...Read more

What foods = quick bowel transit? Have low anal sphincter function, bms take 4+ hrs in small pieces. Work is suffering. I eat lots of insoluble fibre.

What foods = quick bowel transit? Have low anal sphincter function, bms take 4+ hrs in small pieces. Work is suffering. I eat lots of insoluble fibre.

Mineral oil: Try this: every night take 30 cc of prune juice(if you are not diabetic) and /or another 30 cc of mineral oil. You should have bm by morning time. This remedy is not very tasteful. It however work practically in 100% of cases. Fibers likely will not help. Fibers create bulk to stimulate gut mechanically. Mineral oil and prune juice stimulate gut's motion by biochemical means. ...Read more

How does biofeedback work (effectively) on the internal anal sphincter if its contraction and relaxation are uncontrollable to begin with?

How does biofeedback work (effectively) on the internal anal sphincter if its contraction and relaxation are uncontrollable to begin with?

Ask the provider: It will be best to discuss this w/ the provider until it makes sense to you. It's not fully involuntary, but this is too complex to explain here. In general Biofeedback provides evidence of what's happening inside you so that you can learn the associated sensations. Talk to one who does it and can demonstrate it to you. ...Read more

How does the urinary system work?

How does the urinary system work?

URINARY SYSTEM: If you mean the normal evacuation portion then: once you're bladder fills without squeezing the signal reaches the brain. We then decide to go and, at the toilet we actively relax our sphincter, usually with a dead breath, and a signal from the sphincter , through the lower spine , tells the bladder to squeeze cause the doors open. Voiding problems can happen with any of those issues. ...Read more
