Shingles (Herpes Zoster) (Definition)

Hi I have shingles on my left side of the neck. Was wondering if I can cover them with a white non sticky bandage so I don't spread it?
No: Chickenpox is the one spread by exhaling the virus. The virus of shingles is confined to the skin lesion. You can spread it to others by having the skin lesion, discharge and crusting open to air as it is full of the virus. If it is inhaled by someone who has not had chickenpox previously, they can come down with full body chickenpox. ...Read more
No: Shingles is confined to the nerve distribution of whatever nerve is infected (we call these 'dermatomes'). So the rash will spread out as a band only on one side (L or R) of the body. It may take a couple days to fully spread out and become red, blistery & painful. Hopefully seeing a doc before that happens could limit or prevent that. I've shut down 2 cases where the pt came in just before rash. ...Read more

I have shingles blisters on my forehead. Can I take a shower and wash my hair? Is there danger that it will spread to my eye that way?

If you have eye symptoms or shingles on the tip of the nose, see an ophthalmologist. Shower and shampoo does NOT spread shingles. Pills for it, started on day 1 or 2, taken for a week, may shorten the course and reduce the symptoms. ...Read more

Diagnosed with shingles 5 days ago; have lymphedema on 1 arm from removal of 30 breast cancer involved lymph nodes - what if shingles spreads to arm?
Secondary infection: Good news is that shingles always follows set patterns. The outbreaks follow the course of a sensory nerve. So, if the outbreak isn't now near the arm, it is very unlikely that it will go there. You can search online for shingles dermatomes to see the patterns. If it does make it to your arm, secondary infection is your biggest concern. Be careful the blisters do not pop and become infected. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
