Check with MD: as to why you need to be on any antireflux/acid reducing medicine. Rule out problems that might occur over thr long term; address other issues re: weight, meds, alcohol, diet, tobacco, that may affect reflux and GERD. Bad gerd: You may need to try different medications, e.g. Proton pump inhibitors like over the counter omeprazole, which may work a lot better. Also try not to eat after 7pm, avoid alcohol, do not smoke as this irritates stomach, try to place 6 inch blocks under head of bed posts so your upper body is on a slant so fluid from your stomach can not easily get into your throat. I have reflux.  Pepcid (famotidine) used to work.  I took Prilosec 2 months ago and that worked.  What would you recommend for treatment?

GERD: You may have to stay on the prilosec or other PPI medication long term. Consider weight loss if needed. Avoid eating then lying down soon after meals. Avoid foods that worsen reflux (caffeine, peppermints, chocolate, spicy foods etc). Consider placing object like a brick under headboard of bed to elevated it slightly and allow gravity to help you.
