To ensure good liver health either don’t drink alcohol or limit your intake (1 drink for females & 2 for males/ day). Be proactive with hepatitis b (& a) vaccination. Rather safe: Nicotine isn't a particularly concerning chemical in liver disease. If you have to choose your "ills" nicotine gum is safer than smoking cigarettes. Milk thistle, which is often combined with choline, is also relatively well tolerated. No: If you have a fatty liver or liver disease stop eating fatty food, stop eating fried food, stop drinking alcohol, stop taking pain pills and lower your cholesterol. Unlikely: The role of milk thistle in fatty lived disease is limited. In hepatitis c one study showed that high intravenous doses may slow progression, but is not a cure. I do not recommend milk thistle to my patients. It is safe and if someone is ademant about taking it i don't necessarily discourage it. Sure, but...: A number of small studies have yielded conflicting results concerning the effectiveness of milk thistle in hepatitis c and chronic liver disease. A systematic review concluded that although milk thistle may decrease liver enzymes in patients with hepatitis c, there was no clear benefit to this or other herbal medications for chronic hcv infection.
