Is there a difference between generic and name brand OTC meds? What do you prefer?

Is there a difference between generic and name brand OTC meds? What do you prefer?

Difference = cost: There is usually little to no difference in generic versus name brand medications. The active ingredient and amount of the active ingredient should not be different. Generic medications usually undergo stringent testing to ensure little to no difference in effects. I prefer generic brands because these are usually less expensive. ...Read more

How long can a person safely take Advil, a 200 mg dosage daily? Does switching to aspirin make a difference, or do they both harm the body same?

How long can a person safely take Advil, a 200 mg dosage daily? Does switching to aspirin make a difference, or do they both harm the body same?

Why do you need to: take this medication daily. If you are in pain all the time, you need to consult a doctor to find out why and address the underlying cause. No medication is entirely safe and taking any medication daily for a long time will have adverse side effects. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. Practice safe sex. ...Read more

Does the generic version of Zoloft (sertraline) work as well as the brand name for panic attacks? Differenent pharmacist have told me different things.

Yes for most people: For most people yes. The fda demands that generic drugs be 85% to 120% bioavailable compared to the brand name. Most people won't notice the difference and will be happy to pay less but occasional people will notice a difference. ...Read more

Is the generic of Synthroid (thyroxine) just as good? I've only taken the generic and it works. Would the nongeneric name brand work veven better?

Is the generic of Synthroid (thyroxine) just as good? I've only taken the generic and it works. Would the nongeneric name brand work veven better?

Generic l-thyroxine: Is not as reliable or consistent as brand name replacement; it varies from brand to brand and i would not recommend it's use. Just because your lab is normal once per year (or as often as it's checked) doesn't mean it's consistently normal throughout the rest of the time, as it would be if you were receiving the brand name product. The extra money is well worth it. ...Read more

Do pharmaceutical companies make an alternative to percocet, such as mixing the pain medication with ibuprofen instead of Tylenol (acetaminophen) to save the liver?

Ibu could be worse: Acetaminophen, when taken at appropriate doses in a adult (no more than 3000mg in 24 hours) has fewer potential adverse effects than ibuprofen and is the preferred pain medication even in patients with liver cirrhosis (though typically capped at 2000mg daily in these cases). Over-dosing can indeed cause liver damage, but prolonged use at normal doses is safe in otherwise healthy adults. ...Read more

I take leviteracetem for tc seizures. Does name brand or a generic make a difference? There are many manufacturers of generics what is the difference?

I take leviteracetem for tc seizures. Does name brand or a generic make a difference? There are many manufacturers of generics what is the difference?

Brand vs generic: Brand vs generic does make a difference. The brand requires strict proportions of actual drug in formulation where generic can vary up to 20% depending on where it was manufactured. Same medicine at two different drug stores could vary up to 40%, and this could make a big difference. Stick with one pharmacy and ask them to notify you if they get your generic from a new manufacturer. ...Read more
