How do psychologists avoid getting physically attacked? They have some crazy patients.

How do psychologists avoid getting physically attacked? They have some crazy patients.

It : It is important for psychologists and psychiatrists to be knowledgable about a patient's history whenever possible. Does the patient have a history of violent behavior? Does the patient suffer from a condition that is commonly associated with agitation or violence? Is the individual intoxicated on drugs or alcohol which may lower his or her inhibitions? The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior. If possible violence is anticipated, the psychologist or psychiatrist can make provisions before hand, such as ensuring that behavioral health staff or security are available to respond is necessary. As dr bunt indicated, reading one's body language and tone provides very useful cues. Most training programs teach verbal de-escalation techniques. We are also trained to set up an office in a way that would allow a provider to escape if needed and that would prevent the provider's seating from obstructing the patient's path to the door in case they want to expeditiously exit the room. ...Read more

What can we do to take action against people who are being cruel to my ill (ocd) sister?

I need more info: Who is being cruel, a boss, teacher, strangers, family members? The answer would be different depending on who is the offender. Many people simply do not understand mental illness and need education. Ask again if this is not enough. ...Read more

Are doctors pretty much geniuses for being able to know & remember so much? I like medical stuff but can't stand miniature details. How do you do that

You got it all wrong: You don't need to remember everything. No one can. You DO need to know where to FIND it. Doctors are very smart people. If you've ever been around a genius, you know there's a BIG difference between a genius and a very smart person. Even docs who win Nobel Prizes usually aren't geniuses. Smarts aren't enough. Good ideas are cheap. You need the perseverance to keep at it till you find the answer. ...Read more

How do we know if it's ok to ask for help and that fears thoughts are valid enough when others suffer , how do we know that we are not just a burden?

It's okay to ask: The right person to ask help from for fears and troubling thoughts is a mental health provider. You will not be a burden - that's why they're there. Even if there are people worse off, we all hope for some less tragic or difficult cases. It may be different w/ friends/family who may not be able to help and may just feel scared and helpless. That, not you, would be the burden. Get the help you seek ...Read more

Do doctors have to keep colleagues drug use confidential?

That depends on: the context. If we notice red flags within the workplace that suggest that one of our colleagues suffers from a significant impairment - many medical providers would consider it an ethical obligation to address the situation or report it.
