Although the overall prognosis for patients is poor, there are subsets of patients that have modest rates of being alive at 5 years with newer medications. Yes: This is a serious diagnosis. I would recommend prompt treatment with surgery followed by chemotherapy and radiation. Although overall this diagnosis does not carry a good prognosis, some subsets of patients do better than others.
