How come I had some pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) and travelers diarrhea but its not helping?

Mechanical action: Peptobismol is not a cure for travelers diarrhea (which may be produced by several different microorganisms and sometimes requires antibiotic treatment unless spontaneously resolves), but it provides some degree of symptomatic relief, the degree of effectiveness dependent upon the underlying disease. ...Read more

Im having bad stomach pains after taking to many ibuprofens and i took pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) but it doesnt seem to work.how long should it take to work?

It may not: Pepto may not be strong enough to counteract damage done by the nsaid. If the pain has worsened suddenly, consider visiting the ED for an evaluation as there is always risk of perforation or other emergent outcome. Also, better medications can be offered to promote healing of the stomach lining and for the pain you were initially treating. ...Read more

I have been taking imodium (loperamide) and kaopeptate for diahrea from a flu bug but it still doesn't work what else can I do?

Get tested: Get a stool culture, stool for ova and parasites and if you have taken antibiotics in the last 3 months get a stool for clostridium difficile toxin test. If diarrhea persists for more than 3 months you will need a colonoscopy to be sure you do n ot have inflammatory bowel disease. ...Read more

I have an ongoing diarrhea from last week. I tried imodium (loperamide) and lomotil but they didn't work. What to do?

Diarrhea: One week of diarrhea of acute onset suggests some form of infection. Stool exam for the presence of wbcs and culture and tests for giardia may be done if this does not resolve. Suggest you see a doctor and get this worked out. Doubt that this is irritable bowel or new onset inflammatory bowel disease if you have not had these previously. ...Read more

I woke up at 2am with diarrhea and vomiting. I haven't been able to eat all day, just sipping water. Is it safe to take Pepto Bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) that expired ?

In general -: it isn't recommended to take expired medications. There can be a big difference between a medication being expired for 5 day vs 5 years. Without further info - the most prudent recommendation is not to take it. Hope you feel better soon. ...Read more

I'm having watery stools which are black in color, i've taking pepto bismul and still no relief. What can I do to relieve this diarrhea?

I have stomach issues and always take Prilosec but sometimes that's not always good enough. Why can't i take pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) while pregnant? I need it!

I have stomach issues and always take Prilosec but sometimes that's not always good enough. Why can't i take pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) while pregnant? I need it!

No Peptobismol: Peptobismol has Aspirin like products in it. Discuss with your ob/gyn sucking on raw ginger root for pregnancy related issues. Careful with the prilosec. If you have taken for a while, it can lead to vitamin B12 deficiency. Might consider having B12 levels checked. ...Read more

How do I know if my c.diff or other infections related diarrhea is cured? Having solid stool. Been on BRAT diet and pepto dismal.

C- diff cleared??: If your stools have returned to normal you can assume the C diff is cleared. The immunoassay for the toxin may still be positive so not useful. But as long as your stool is solid and not slimy foul smelling - its likely over with good luck. ...Read more

I accidentally took too many laxatives and have been having bad diarrhea. I have a job interview soon, and i already tried pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) and brat diet.

Diarrhea: This is likely to correct itself quickly, but in the event that it does not, loperamide or Lomotil (diphenoxylat and atropine) (diphenoxylate/atropine) are both popular agents effective in treating some forms of diarrhea. Check with you friendly pharmacist to see if these are sold otc. Good luck and hope you get the job. ...Read more

I took a laxative but right after i had a bowel movement. Then the next day now I have diarrhea.I just took some pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) will that stop ddiarrhea?

Unlikely: The pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) may help reduce some of the upset stomach and cramping associated with the laxative. Its best to avoid using a laxative for now. If the constipation returns, consider using Miralax ( polyethylene glycol) 17 grams ( one capful) in 8 ounces of liquid and drink. ...Read more

I ate Chinese food today which was lovely but I slightly overdid it. Now I have really uncomfortable gas pain and tummy pain can I take Pepto Bismol (bismuth subsalicylate)?

Chinese food and MSG: Hello Ms. Cornelius. Just recall that Chinese food may contain MSG (monosodium glutamate) which is a condiment that gives that food its taste. MSG is well known among migraineurs to be a strong food trigger so beware. Nowadays, you can request MSG free menu items. Pepto Bismol, (bismuth subsalicylate) GasX, and other OTC products are fine for bloated feelings. Just don't overdo those either. ...Read more
