How can I prevent stomach bleeding whole taking Plavix, (clopidogrel)aspirin or similar? I have erosive gastritis and a DES after a heart attack.

How can I prevent stomach bleeding whole taking Plavix, (clopidogrel)aspirin or similar? I have erosive gastritis and a DES after a heart attack.

Ppi: It's very important for you to take Plavix in the first few months post heart attack. I'm not sure if you have had any intervention including heart Cath and stent placement. But the concern I have is that u need to be on protective therapy for your stomach like PPI. I recommend to f/u with cardiologist on how long u need plavix and adaptor in but mean while u need PPI like protonix, nexium (esomeprazole) ... ...Read more

I am worried about taking 75mg aspirin 6 months after coiling of unruptured brain aneurysm. I had tias after surgery) incase of stomach or brain bleed?

Should be okay: I agree with the other docs who have answered this question. Doesn't say where you're from, but if you're in Europe I understand your concern: European docs are much more nervous about aspirin than US docs & try to use lower doses. However, the European Stroke Study showed that a dose in the 75-mg range provides a typical degree of prevention without appreciably increasing bleeding complications. ...Read more

Can you tell me reasons why i get abdominal cramps from aspirin and acetominophen?

Reaction: It is difficult to explain exactly why but it sounds as though you are having a reaction to one or the other. Aspirin can certainly cause irritation of the lining of the stomach, and that happens more in some than others. ...Read more

Does aspirin truly prevent blood clots? Is the bleeding risk more evident than the benefit?

Does aspirin truly prevent blood clots? Is the bleeding risk more evident than the benefit?

Not really: Aspirin works to inhibit platelet function, but is not an anticoagulant like Coumadin (warfarin) or heparin. Depending on why you are taking Aspirin and your risk factors, it can be more beneficial that the bleeding risk. But that requires more of an individual balancing of risk/benefits. ...Read more

I have taken bc powder aspirin for years and daily for the past year and I recently started vaginal bleeding which im sure is related to the aspirin?

Not necessarily: It is not a good idea to take bc powder everyday. It can cause bleeding issues, but usually in the gastrointestinal tract. New onset abnormal vaginal bleeding can be caused by many things other than Aspirin and must be investigated with an exam and vaginal ultrasound. ...Read more

I've just started Zoloft (sertraline) and also am supposed to take 1 325mg aspirin per day per Dr instructions. I've read this can cause bleeding. Should I take?

I've just started Zoloft (sertraline) and also am supposed to take 1 325mg aspirin per day per Dr instructions. I've read this can cause bleeding. Should I take?

Discuss with your Dr: Zoloft (sertraline) and other SSRI type medications have the potential to cause bleeding because they increase the anti-platelet action of aspirin. A 2009 review of the medical literature http://1.usa.gov/1zMVIjj concluded that Because the absolute risk of GI bleeds with SSRIs is low, precautions are probably necessary only in high-risk patients, such as those with history of gastritis, ulcer or bleeding. ...Read more

Is there evidence Plavix (clopidogrel) ( Clopidogrel) causes more incidents of GI bleeding than Aspirin? Also Have Diverticulitis .

Plavix (clopidogrel) bleeds more: Aspirin acts to prevent platelet adhesion and the mechanism for Plavix (clopidogrel) is through platelet also but different. Overall the incidence of bleeding would be greater with Plavix (clopidogrel). With diverticulosis, the bleeding occurs more likely (stretches the sac of colon) than diverticulITIS which is a complication of OSIS. ...Read more

Why taking it?: Why are you taking it? Did a doctor prescribe it? If you need pain relief, try Tylenol (acetaminophen). Internal bleeding can occur slowly and can suddenly become severe. Tylenol (acetaminophen) is safer. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low fat milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. Practice safe sex. ...Read more
