DEPENDS: It really depends on a lot of factors. So not everyone that says that they are having suicidal thoughts will automatically get hospitalized. There are thoughts and then there is a distinct plan with the means to carry it out. If there is a plan or an inability to feel safe with oneself then the person should be hospitalized. Get help!: It's good this child has someone like you who cares! If they have a plan, I hope you are able to get them to a secure, safe place (Hospital ER) ASAP. Even w/o a plan, if they want to die, they need to be in seriously good intensive supportive treatment - not just pills or infreq contact. Why do ERs automatically place you on an involuntary hold when you seek inpatient care for suicidal ideation prior to attempting to harm yourself?
