A : A boil also known as a skin abscess is caused by a bacterial infection that starts in a hair follicle or sweat gland. Initially the skin turns red, and a painful bump develops. After about a week the lump starts to turn white as pus collects under the skin. If the boil is pretty small, like the size of a green pea, you can use warm compresses, and apply topical neosporin.
