How Can I Tell If My Big Toe Fractured Or Just Badly Bruised

It seems that many believe that a "fracture" is a lesser injury or an incomplete break in the bone, but this is not correct. Fractures may be displaced or ...Read more

Stubbed toe, (beside big toe) few days ago, bruising, min. Swelling but hurts when I move it, esp. Right on top of foot, could I have fractured it?
Maybe: Only way to tell is with an X-ray. If the toe is still straight, the only thing that is usually done is a splint to the adjacent toe. If the symptoms are bad enough, and/or the toe is deformed, best to have an X-ray. See an orthopedist next week to get this done. Otherwise, need to go to an ER. Hope this helps! ...Read more

When should I start walking after fifth toe displaced fracture? Ten days and still hurts when I lower my foot. New bruises also sprang up in foot
Maybe a second look.: I would think that ten days is enough time to allow you to walk with some mild to moderate pain. Since you are seeing new bruising something else should be considered. While enjoying the toe fracture, did you fracture something else that is now affecting you recovery. You need to get the foot x-rayed and check for other fractures. Nsaids should take the edge off and perhaps an accommodating shoe. ...Read more

Pain near toes for 4weeks, now small boney lump on top of foot. Fuzzy feeling in toes. Could this be a fracture? No swelling, little bruising.
Ganglion cyst?: Sounds like this could be a ganglion cyst (fluid filled bump). Does it move around? Could be interfering with a nerve causing the "fuzzy" feeling in the toes. Usually there is no bruising with a ganglion unless the cause was trauma. This should be checked out by your physician. You can never be too cautious about bumps or lumps. ...Read more

Be seen: It is hard to say without the benefit of an exam and xray. If it seems like it was mild, you could rest, elevate and ice it. If it seems more severe I would be seen to rule out a more serious injury such as a fracture; particularly if you can not bear weight on it. ...Read more

I hit a foul ball off my foot last night, and I woke up this morning and could barely walk. There's swelling but no bruising. Bruised, or fracture?
Could Be Either: Both bruise and fracture are possible given the injury. I would follow the RICE protocol, which is Rest (don't walk on it), Ice the affected area, Compression with an ACE bandage if that helps, Elevation of the the affected foot. You can also add naprosyn or ibuprofen (Aleve (naproxen) or Motrin) to help with swelling. If pain worsens or you're unable to bear any weight on it after a few days consider X-ray. ...Read more

My friend is experiencing bruising and minor swelling on the top side of foot, following distal fibula fracture surgery. Should we worry?
Probably not: It is always smart to check with the surgeon if there is signficant pain in a new area following surgery, but gravity is usually the culprit here. With any surgery or broken bone there is always some bleeding, and in the case of the foot, one would expect that bleeding to travel downward, when visible through skin, it shows as bruisng. You will see this in bad ankle sprains even without a break. ...Read more
