Lab test, skin color: If the skin looks like it is getting deeper yellow, then the jaundice is getting worse. Other places to look are the urine and the stool. Jaundice will make your urine very dark yellow and your stools will be pale gray. The most accurate way to tell is by a blood test for the total bilirubin level. ...Read more

My friend who is 33 m, is recently diagnosed with hepatitis & jaundice. How long will it take to get it cured? Just need an aproximate time 4 recovery.

Depends on cause...: The answer completely depends on the cause. For example if it is from hepatitis a alone, he will better (most likely) in a few weeks. If it alcoholic hepatitis, on the other hand, it may be fatal within weeks. So the cause of the hepatitis really matters. And, of course, it is feasible that there are multiple causes acting simultaneously (eg hep b and c); one may dominate now, the other later.... ...Read more

My nephew started to get yellow skin all over his body! He is 10 months old now and he had it for 6 months.?

Easy: This is what is known as carotenemia. Carotene is a precursor of vitamin a and the yellow color comes from a build-up of carotene from the ingestion of yellow vegetables like squash and carrots. It is totally harmless and you can differentiate it from jaundice by looking at the whites of the eyes. If they are also yellow, it is jaundice. Decrease intake of yellow veggies. ...Read more

My son is jaundice and he won't go to Dr. He is an addict and know he has hepitatis. Can he die if he doesn't get treatment?

Some do: I recall a 23 yo who died a few years back from Hepatitis A. Untreated Hepatitis B (the addicts get) can & does kill. Those who recover can go on to chronic liver failure, liver cirrhosis & liver cancer. An addict would NEVER be considered for a liver transplant, which can be the only way to avoid a miserable death. Some kids consider themselves invulnerable, in this case, it is just a bad choice ...Read more

Respected sirs my father have diabetes &hapatitis B in which time he get jaundice? Plz give me ur kind information

See GI doc: Hi. I'm sorry about your dad. Is the hepatitis B chronic? If he is acutely jaundiced from chronic hepatitis B, that can signal something bad going on in the liver, such as cirrhosis or liver cancer, both of which hepatitis B can cause. I think he should see a GI doc for tests and liver imaging. The diabetes is unlikely to be related to the hepatitis B and jaundice, but could be. Good luck to him! ...Read more

Hi doctor I wondered how can you tell if your eyes are jaundice because sometimes I thought my eyes looked jaundice but it was just vains?

Red vs yellow: Jaundice stains the sclera and produces a generalized yellowing of the eye. Veins are reddish and when irritated may dilate and cause diffuse redness. Look at the color to compare. Also jaundice comes from liver damage which does not come and go, so if the yellow has started and doesn't go away, then you need to see a GI doctor for liver analysis especially if you know you are at risk. ...Read more

Is it possible that newborn jaundice cause longterm medical problems as they get older?

Unlikely an issue: About 1/3 of newborns have neonatal jaundice to some degree, peaking around day 4 and gradually declining. Some have jaundice enough to require phototherapy (lights) and rarely some require transfusions. As long as they receive proper therapy if needed, there is rarely if ever any long term effect on the kid or adult. ...Read more

Is it possible to get itchiness from liver problems even if you don't have jaundice and have normal bilirubin levels?

Very doubtful: I would look for another cause of your generalized itching. Often it's something as simple as being allergic to the detergent with which you wash your clothes. If you do have liver issues as evidenced by elevated liver enzymes, this needs to be worked up, itchiness or no, as this warns of several deadly but treatable diseases. ...Read more
