How can I tell the difference between eczema and ring worm?

How can I tell the difference between eczema and ring worm?

Sometimes it's hard: Ringworm (see picture), which is a fungal skin infection, is usually round or oval and has raised pink edges with central flattening and scaling. It can enlarge and may or may not itch. Eczema comes in various shapes, including round or oval, but tends to be a solid patch of itchy, dry, raised, rough, red rash. Sometimes a test (skin scraping) is needed to see if fungus is present. ...Read more

What is the difference between eczema, psoriasis and ringworm?

What is the difference between eczema, psoriasis and ringworm?

Differences: Eczema is a chronic inflammatory skin condition due to genetic defects in the proteins and lipids supporting the skin layer/barrier called the epidermis. Extra skin cells form thick, silvery scales and itchy, dry, red patches, that are painful. ...Read more

My 2 year old has an eczema spot that resembles ringworm. It appears to be drying up, but it has also gotten bigger. Is there anything we can put on i?

Eczema?: Nummular eczema can mimic the look of ringworm. Are you sure that it is eczema and not ringworm though? You can use the traditional eczema treatment on it, if u r sure. Dove sensitive skin soap to wash, aquaphor to moisturize and 1% hydrocortisone directly to that spot. Hope this helps. If you are unsure, seek the diagnosis from your pediatrician or dermatologist. ...Read more

How is ringworm diagnosed? My one year old has a circular rash that looks like it may either be eczema or ringworm.

Ringworm: Often, the diagnosis of ringworm is obvious from its location and appearance. Otherwise, skin scrapings for microscopic examination and a culture of the affected skin can establish the diagnosis of ringworm. If the diagnosis is unclear, a potassium hydroxide (koh) preparation of a skin scraping can be reviewed under the microscope to confirm the diagnosis of a fungal dermatophyte infection. ...Read more

Not sure exactly: what you're asking. From your description, it sounds like the proper diagnosis, but you didn't mention what you were treated with. If you just started on your treatment, it should start improving in a couple of days; if not, please go back to the doctor. ...Read more

I suffer from eczema on the hands year round. I recently developed two perfectly round rings on the side of my hands. Can ringworm be painful?

Itching: Eczema is common caused by contact allergens (gloves, wetness, fur) and causes inflammation which is itchy. The areas you are referring to might have become lichenified or inflamed to the point where they are red, thickened, and painful. This does not discount the fact that skin breakdown from eczema can increase your chance of opportunistic infections like the fungus that causes ringworm. ...Read more

I'm using flucort, nizral & aloederm for the leftover darkness of ring worm & eczema. Are they effective?

Fading dark spots: If the fungal infection and eczema have resolved and only dark spots are left, the meds you mentioned are not useful in fading dark spots. Lightening of the skin you see with corticosteroid creams is actually a side effect and goes together with atrophy (thinning of the skin), acne, stretch marks. And they don't really fade the dark spots, just damage the skin. A hydroquinone cream can be tried. ...Read more

Eczema food allergies mistaken for ring worm?

possibly: The distribution pattern for eczema is fairly predictable, while "ring worm" which is a superficial fungus infection can occur anywhere on the body including scalp, beard, trunk, groin, foot. Both rashes can be itchy, but eczema is really itchy. Eczema responds well to cortisone creams/ointments, while cortisone can potentially worsen ringworm. My 8 month has a round red rash on her right cheek, is it eczema or ring worm? It doesn't seem to bother her and gives away with cortisone lotion

Likely not ringworm: Skin rashes are common in infants & a single patch of rash can be a lot of things. From drool rash to ringworm to allergic reaction, etc. If it improves with hydrocortizone it is probably not ringworm. It doesn't sound worrisome at this point so you can bring it up with your pcp at the next scheduled visit. ...Read more
