Stop the rub: I consider the vick's rub an air pollutant when used in infants. It can prolong or worsen congestion. A liberal wash out of her nose with saline can remove some of the irritants & thin out the mucous. Sometimes you must wash out the nose using saline like a garden hose to be effective. ...Read more

Sinus inf in baby: If your baby is owrse in the symptoms he or she is having then it probably is. You should talk to your pediatrician. Some sinus infections are viral&don't need antibiotics & do get beter on their own, however if the baby is worse the doctor should be able to tell you what else you can do after the exam. ...Read more

I haven't had a runny nose for almost 2 years, and I often struggle to breath through my nose in certain postures. Why? Any relation to stress?

I haven't had a runny nose for almost 2 years, and I often struggle to breath through my nose in certain postures. Why? Any relation to stress?

Not stress related: My first question is did you get a pet? Cold may also cause runny nose but this is seasonal. The runny nose is probably due to allergies and I see you are on Claritan which is usually for allergies. Stress is not a cause of runny nose. ...Read more

I don't have a runny nose or cough but I can feel a lot of congestion in my chest and its difficult to breathe sometimes. What should I do?

That depends...: Depends on how long the symptoms have been going on and whether there are associated symptoms such as swelling in the ankles, wheeze, fever, worsened breathing when lying flat and a number of other questions and physical exam data points. Try mucinex (guaifenesin) to loosen any phlegm. If symptoms are long-standing, an exam by a physician at a minimum. ...Read more

My toddler is having a whitish tongue and foul smelling breath. She also has an occasional runny nose and little bit of coughing. What's the reason?

Catarrh or thrush: Sounds like a bit of an upper respiratory infection, likely viral, could be oral thrush. I think an examination by the pediatrician should be sufficient to solve the problem. In the mean time make sure whatever goes in her mouth is CLEAN (including your nipples if you are breastfeeding) and be sure she stays WELL HYDRATED. Watch for any elevated temperature or fever and report right away. ...Read more

Nasal noise: The nose & upper airway of small kids is a bit rubbery & vibrates when additional air is moving through with a cough or deep breath. This can produce lots of odd sounds/squeaks. The inner membranes of the nose can swell & constrict the nasal passages increasing the noise & vibrations.A kids general play activity is a good gauge of how sick they are, so this sounds minor. ...Read more

Sore : Sore throat is a fairly common symptom associated with many illnesses. Most of the time it resolves on its own without any other issues. Occasionally it can be due to something more serious that needs treatment. Reasons to seek care are: - any fever - since it could be strep and you can't tell without an exam/testing - if it lasts longer than 3 or 4 days - any difficulty opening your mouth - unable to swallow - severe pain - bleeding in the throat - redness or swelling on the outside of the neck - any difficulty breathing or noisy breathing in the meantime, taking Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen for pain, using a humidifier in your bedroom, drinking plenty of fluids such as hot tea/broth or cold liquids and a spoonful of honey can help. ...Read more
