Clinical judgement: Any burn, thermal, chemical or electrical has degrees depending on depth of involvement. In simplest terms, 1st degree (superficial) will heal rapidly (7-10 days), 2nd degree (into dermis) can heal without scarring (10-14 days) if uncomplicated, 3rd-4th degree (deepest) usually grafting is needed. Laser : Laser skin resurfacing can be effective in improving skin texture. However, the severity of a burn will determine if a laser can be utilized. Burns that have injured the deeper layers of the skin may not be amenable to skin resurfacing. The premise behind resurfacing is inducing a certain level of controlled injury to the skin to promote skin healing. This can be accomplished with thermal injury (lasers), mechanical (dermabrasion) and chemical (chemical peels). In regards to being "least" invasive, this is not true. The term laser is general and not specific. There are many lasers in medicine and the specific laser (ie co2 vs erbium vs nd:yag) must be known in order to determine its "invasiveness". Additionally, the experience of the user as well as the settings will also determine the level of injury or "invasiveness".
