Does sciatic nerve pain typically go down the outside of the calf muscle and back of calf?

Yes and Yes: Sciatica is the symptom of leg pain caused by a disc herniation or narrowing where the nerve exits the spine. A disc herniation is a outpouching of the disc from its normal place into the spinal canal or on the nerve and can be a source of pain in the back or down the leg or even the groin area. The nerve then goes to the muscle which can then hurt, spasm or feel sore or irritated. ...Read more

Usually have sciatic nerve pain in right leg/back. Now have it in left leg/back? Burning sharp pain from lower back through thigh, what causes this?

A few thoughts: Any pain that runs down buttock &/or back of thigh is often labeled 'sciatic' pain.Truth is, there are many poss. causes. The sciatic nerve or one of it's branches can be 'pinched' by a herniated disc, stuck vertebra, or piriformis muscle spasm (COMMON in pregnancy). Many other causes such as referred pain from SI ligament injury, too.In pregnancy, ligaments stretch more easily leading to pain. ...Read more

Rest: For inveterate sciatica, positional changes can aid in resolution. I have discovered a useful position of resting. A long couch is chosen. The sufferer lies flat on the back. The pained hip-leg is bent at the knee and leaned onto back of the couch. The other leg is placed with foot on the distant arm rest of the couch. 56 year-old woman notices radicular pain after taking vitamin B6 supplement for three years.....?

B6 toxicity is well recognized: There are a few questions that need to be asked in this case. Exactly how much B6 was the patient taking? According to recommended standards 200mg daily is the limit. Toxicity is thought to occur at levels of 1000mg. daily and above though much lower have been reported on rare occasions(100-300mg). Secondly, what exactly was the quality of her pain? Described symptoms of neural toxicity involves sensory neuropathy described mainly as burning dysesthesias and numbness. The case talks about a RADICULOPATHY. That is typically not the same type of pain as we find in chemical toxicities. Pain in the feet could very well be dysesthesias but the history could be a bit more specific there in order to attach more positive points for B6 sequelae. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16320662 ...Read more

My right quad has been somewhat numb. I get occasional sciatic nerve pain due to piriformis tightness on my left side. Any thoughts or explanations?

Meralgia: If the numbness is on the front outside (anterolateral) thigh, this could be meralgia paresthetica. If the numbness is along the front of the thigh, this could be femoral neuropathy. Inside of thigh, think obturator neuropathy. None of the above are related to the piriformis muscle or sciatic nerve. ...Read more
