How bad do ankle cortisone shots hurt?

How bad do ankle cortisone shots hurt?

Not too much at all: If done right and not hitting the cartilage or bone, it is basically a quick needle stick...Some docs even spray you with a cold-spray (ethyl chloride) to reduce the sting of the needle stick...I would not fret too much over it..It is a quick procedure....Matters of seconds. Good luck. ...Read more

I have arthritis in my foot and ankle. I have tried cortisone shots which provide relief for a week. Is there an alternative which lasts longer?

Depends what kind...: The most common type is osteoarthritis. The most common treatment is non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication (ibuprofen, etc). Cortisone injections are sometimes helpful for months, but only if there is inflammation. If there is chronic joint damage, the injections may be minimally effective as you have described. Rheumatoid arthritis or others may benefit from special medications. ...Read more

If cortisone shots don't work what would be the next option for treating lower back pain that is sending pain down my leg n bottom?

Nerve damage: Great question... Its very important to treat pain and to prevent nerve damage. There are multiple ways to treat a herniated disc. They include: weight loss, physical therapy, chiropractic care, disc decompression (traction), epidural injections, intradiscal procedures, and surgery. An EMG is the best test to see if you have old or active nerve damage (if so- you need surgery). ...Read more

Chronic leg pain sciatic n thigh/butt. Had 2 cortisone shots. Pain is gone. Been 3 wks. Dr said i had bursitis. What does this mean if shot helped?

Chronic leg pain sciatic n thigh/butt. Had 2 cortisone shots. Pain is gone. Been 3 wks. Dr said i had bursitis. What does this mean if shot helped?

Cortisone works!: Cortico-steroids are life saving drugs that are used to reduce acute inflammation. It can truly be a miracle drug, but unfortunately riddled with side effects and uncomfortable long term signs and symptoms: the fact that it worked may not be diagnostic for bursitis, though very possible. Prolonged use shuts your adrenals from working and weight gain, facial swelling, insomnia & many probs ensue. ...Read more

I have mild stenosis of lumber spine. Have had 3 cortisone shots with no relief from leg pain. Ct mylogram next. What will happen next?

Depends on stenosis: It depends on the degree of your spinal stenosis. This is a mechanical impingement of the nerves in your spinal canal. The next step is typically a surgical decompression. It can either be done through a minimally invasive approach or a larger incision. The method of repair depends on your anatomy and the ct myelogram should be good at determining this. ...Read more

Sever oa in both my knees doc won't give anymore cortisone shots too young for surgery in sever pain keeping active but hurts what else can be done?

See details: First of all, it is very unusual for a 35 year old to have advanced oa of the knees. I would seek a second opinion with a rheumatologist. If you truly have advanced oa, nonsurgical options are very limited. You can try injectable lubricants which can occasionally help in advanced disease. ...Read more

My wife's foot hurts worse after cortisone shot for plantar fascitis. Is it possible to damage a nerve during an injection?

Very common problem.: I give cortisone shots on a daily basis for plantar fascitiis. However, i always tell my patients that the first 1-2 days they will have more pain than before then it will start to feel better after that. I also tell my patients that its extremely important to ice the area where the injection was given to help reduce swelling and pain.http://www.feetdoc.com/plantar-foot-problems/heel-pain/. ...Read more

I got a cortisone shot in my L foot becuz my feet constantly burn, a week later now both feet hurt much worse Is this normal & should I do the r foot?

Not typical response: Cortisone is a steroid medication. Cortisone has one primary function which is to reduce inflammation. Typically, a cortisone injection will not make a condition worse nor alter the anatomy. If you had persistent burning in the treated foot and additional symptoms in the other foot then you may have some other problem. Please relay this to your doctor so that he/she may reconsider diagnosis. ...Read more
