M58, how accurate is A1c test, because my A1c is 5.8% but my home instrument gives fasting 115 to 150 depending on the diet I take night before? Advise

A1C is accurate: However it measures average serum glucose over a 3 month period. An A1C of 5.8% equals an average glucose of about 115-120. Your meter may not be far off. ...Read more

Had my A1C checkefd about a year ago it was 7.2. I just did a home test and it is now 6.1 is that better?

Depends: An Aic level of 7.2 means that you are diabetic. Have you been on treatment for diabetes? If you were extremely compliant with the treatment, it is possible that your A1c level is 6.1 and that would be good. However, home tests are not as accurate as lab tests. If you have not been under treatment, you should consult your doctor at the earliest. ...Read more

DM 2 for10 yrs-Every 4 mos. My FBS and A1C are tested & I'm told if these results are good (and they are), that I don't need to test @ home. Is this OK?

Testing glucose: Yes, this is a good approach. You can test at home if you want, but it will not tell you much more than your 4 month FBS and A1C, and it can get expensive. ...Read more

Hemaglobin A1c is 19.8 on a home test what does this mean?

High sugar or wrong: Hemoglobin a1c show average daily glucose levels over 3 months. Hemoglobin in red blood cells change when exposed to glucose. The cells are counted to determine a level. Diabetes with a hba1c of 7 or less (average glucose <120 daily) is well-controlled. A 19.8 test result may be wrong or glucose levels are dangerous. See your doctor asap to get reliable results and begin appropriate treatment. ...Read more

How accurate is A1C test? As compare to normal fasting blood suger test. What is the safe limit for A1C?

Testing for diabetes: Hi. The tests for diabetes (fasting glucose, post-challenge glucose, 3-month average glucose, and random glucose) all have their strengths and weaknesses. A1c is an excellent test and vital to the modern management of diabetes; it's NOT the most sensitive diagnostic test, however. Fasting and post-challenge glucoses can both reveal more subtle abnormalities. Random glucose is a blunt instrument. ...Read more

Is the A1c test for diabetes accurate?

Is the A1c test for diabetes accurate?

Yes, it is.: The HgbA1C is a measure reflective of your degree of diabetic control in the long term. It essentially represents a three month average of your fingersticks, as if you took a fingerstick every minute, night and day, eating and fasting, for three months straight and then averaged them all. Technically, it's the percentage of red blood cells that have glucose attached to them. ...Read more

How accurate is a hemoglobin A1c test in indicating hypoglycemia?

How accurate is a hemoglobin A1c test in indicating hypoglycemia?

Poor: Hba1c is fair at detecting chronically high bgs, but very poor at detecting low bgs. Fortunately, true low bgs are very rare and almost never sustained or recurrent. The sensation of "hypoglycemia", when related to sugar at all in people not treated with diabetes medications, is usually the normal response to low-ish sugars, which corrects them and keeps the body well. ...Read more

A1c is 6.2 home tests run 135 to 201 what should my blood sugar run?

6.2: An A1c would not normally be 6.2 with those blood sugar numbers.
Please go to your doctor and have them check your blood sugar and repeat the A1c

I am 48; prediabetic (A1C is 6.4)my doctor says my GFR of 89 is normal. Is this accurate?

GFR kidney marker: GFR declines with age. What is considered "normal" at age 50 might be considered low at age 40. The commonly accepted cutoff for "chronic kidney disease" has been =90. If urine microalbumin/Cr is normal (not spilling protein in urine), urinalysis is normal, and GFR is stable, 89 likely to be OK. ...Read more

Is A1c 6.5 acceptable? My glucose meters aren't accurate; my lab plasma sugar is 35 points higher.

It depends: Upon your definition of "acceptable". It's not normal, and the closer you get it to normal the less risk you're at of dying early and avoiding complications. If going on dialysis when you could have avoided it is acceptable, then it's fine. Always strive to do better each day, there is always something you can improve and diabetes tends to worsen over time when left alone. ...Read more

A1c 5.5. Fasting gluc 109 (111 3 months prior). Fingerstick tests at home ALWAYS under 85 upon wake up. My GP says I'm "pre-diabetic." Thoughts?

A1c 5.5. Fasting gluc 109 (111 3 months prior). Fingerstick tests at home ALWAYS under 85 upon wake up. My GP says I'm "pre-diabetic." Thoughts?

Prediabetes: The diagnosis of "pre-diabetes" is probably based on your fasting blood glucose level being over 100. If you have a family history of diabetes, that increases the likelihood that you have pre-diabetes. Your HgbA1c is well within normal limits. Interestingly, your fasting blood sugar levels are normal at home, which makes pre-diabetes less likely. Regular exercise can prevent progression to DM. ...Read more

Last 3 fasting gluc (lab): 110, 111, 103, (months apart) despite TWO normal a1c's & repeated morning gluc in low 80s on home monitor. Type2 imminent?

110 etc.: Those blood sugars are not too bad but low 80's is better.
Please see your doctor and have your blood sugar checked on the doctor's device and yours.
If your home monitor is giving you the wrong information you need a better instrument.

Prediabetes: Some prediabetic patients have impaired fasting blood sugar but not impaired glucose tolerance. Your pancreas secretes enough Insulin when you take in foods so that your postprandial blood sugars are not abnormally high. This may change in time but you can delay the impairment with good diet and weight control. ...Read more

My a1c is 5.8 (pre diabetic) During 1st home test my heart was racing, I was nervous. Fasting result was 119. Could this affect result?

No: Aic is not affected by short term issues, like being nervous. Both your fasting glucose and A1c are consistent with being pre-diabetic. You can help your cause by losing weight and exercising 30 minutes/day for at least 5 days/week. See a doctor or a nutritionist for dietary advise. You have about 60% chance of avoiding diabetes, if you lose about 10% of body weight, exercise and watch diet. ...Read more

What is A1c test?

What is A1c test?

Glycosylated protein: Glycosylated hemoglobin A1c is a type of protein in your blood that is formed in the presence of sugar. Non-enzymatic glycation of the hemoglobin protien, thus higher sugar/glucose over time will cause higher level of hemoglobina1c. Docs order this test to assess the average/approximate level of sugar in blood over several months (3 or so), thus level of diabetes control.
Consult doc.

It Depends: The A1c is essentially a way to measure your average blood sugar (as if you are taking it all the time) for the past 2-3 mths. There are ways to convert it to a sugar estimate which may be better to understand. If the A1c is in the nl or high nl range, it is mostly about lifestyle with exercise & a diet low in simple carbs.
