How Accurate Are Pregnancy Scans
When your due date arrives, you will be more than ready to have your baby! Most women deliver the baby somewhere between 37 and 42 weeks. Approximately 7% of babies are not delivered by 42 weeks, and when that happens, it is referred to ...Read more
Depends: The precision of an ultrasound depends somewhat on the equipment, the technician, the interpreter & the reason for study. If the scan is done to verify the placental location, fetal position & head size (to verify dates), simple equipment works ok. Specific things about baby like heart anatomy, facial features and the like, require a skilled technician using special equipment & interpretation. ...Read more
LMP dating vs US:
Both methods have some error. Us dating is most accurate between 8 and 13 weeks using the crown rump length of the fetus.

If accuracy of scans r supposed to be excellent in 1st trimester, particularly at 8-10 weeks gestation, then why is there an error margin of +/- 7dys?
Math: There is a margin of error in everything is life. In sonography the margin exists because of the mathematics involved in measuring a fetus and then applying those measurement to standardized algorithms that establish the gestational age. The further along the wider the margin or error as one fetus begins to individualize. ...Read more
Depends on purpose: If the goal is to look at baby for seeing normal fetal anatomy, the earliest would be 18 weeks. This allows the m ajor organ systems to be formed to the point of being able to be evaluated. Before 18 weeks the heart has not finished forming and therefore a scan performed prior to this date does not really look at the normally formed fetal heart but a precursor. ...Read more
When used as directe: Home pregnancy tests are only accurate when used as directed. This typically means waiting until you've missed your first period or 4 weeks after your last one. Obviously, you then have to follow the directions for use & interpretation. Yes, they can be falsely negative but it's unlikely the further out you are from your lmp.
