Are asthma deaths generally preventable? I have asthma plus bronchitis (acute) and I'm worried bc still wheezing on roids etc.

Asthma exacerbation: Absolutely, asthma deaths are preventable. If your bronchodilator is not working then either the canister is empty, or you are not taking it properly and medicine is not reaching in properly. You need aggressive treatment for asthma and if home treatment is not stopping wheezing please see MD or go to ER asap. When associated with bronchitis, steaming and removing mucus from lungs helps a lot. ...Read more

Lung (Definition)

Deoxygenated blood enters the lungs from the right side of the heart and travels to the lungs. When you inspire, oxygen flows into the lungs, transverses the capilliares and attaches to hemoglobin down a gradient. At the same time, co2 diffuses into the capilaries and is expelled with exhalation. Oxygen rich blood then flows to the left side of the heart and into the ...Read more

Workup/M.D. visit: CF is one possible cause of frequent respiratory infections and a sweat chloride test is used to help diagnose CF in addition, there are many forms of immunodeficiency which can cause frequent infections. I also would suggest a chest xray to view the thorax. Reflux and possible aspiration into the lungs is another possibility. Records can be reviewed by prmg/pediatr resp @8582599689. ...Read more

My son was born w/ dual pneumothorax ischemic hypoxia &congenital pneumonia.I was diagnosed with mild chorioamnitis.Should I worry in future pregnancy?

Unclear: These issues seem to more related to the delivery itself rather than a pregnancy problem. However, with so many complications, it would be prudent to speak to your OB doctor as to what initiated all the issues. ...Read more

Your best bet: Is to review a question like this with your medical oncologist. There are many different factors that contribute to survival statistics and you want to make sure you're being provided with accurate information. End stage kidney disease(pkd). Recurrent infections since apr, 12. Been on levoflox 500 since then.Noticed redness of skin in the leg.Is the drug safe?

PKD and levofloxacin: Levofloxacin is a good medication, though can have tendon side effects. Cipro (ciprofloxacin) and Levo are especially good for PKD associated infections. Redness of leg skin may reflect some edema -- is there evidence of rash on trunk or arms? ...Read more

I may have cystic fibrosis, COPD or lung cancer (my maternal grandfather had stage IV lung cancer), how to know?

Diagnosis....: There are diagnostic tests your doctor can order to be sure you don't have these conditions. For example, pulmonary function testing will show chronic obstruction if you have COPD and a chest CT can help rule out lung cancer and there is specific testing for cystic fibrosis. If you are smoking, you need to quit ASAP to lower the risk of COPD and lung CA. See a lung doctor for the testing you need ...Read more

Should get better: Some born with poor IgA production tend toward more ear/sinus/diarrhea infections in infancy. Many of these can be quite worrisome and admission for dehydration, etc would be expected. They are not as prone to severe infections as those with combined deficiencies, and most are less vulnerable as they get older, when size reduces risk of dehydration and general immunity builds up. ...Read more

Husband was diagnosed with end stage liver disease, congestive heart failure, common variable immunodeficiency, ulcerative colitis. How much longer?

Husband was diagnosed with end stage liver disease, congestive heart failure, common variable immunodeficiency, ulcerative colitis. How much longer?

Impossible: There are many variables that you don't state (and probably don't know). Even if all the lab values were available, an accurate time table is never possible with human beings. I think you know from your question that each day with your husband now is precious. Try to enjoy what time he has left. ...Read more

I'm a young survivor of a massive pulmonary emboli which was caused from birth control, what are my options for "birth control" besides condoms?

I'm a young survivor of a massive pulmonary emboli which was caused from birth control, what are my options for "birth control" besides condoms?

Empathetic - Careful: Cause is a guess, very rarely a simple certainty: issues too complex. While estrogen/progesterone (derivatives of cholesterol) supplements tend to increase clotting, many issues involved in venous clotting (& pulmonary emboli), e.g. Body build, vein valves, localized vein injuries (asymptomatic), smoke, inactivity, prolonged sitting, venous stasis, etc. Consider iuds, male/female ligation, etc. ...Read more

Can baby have lung aspiration disease if passed meconium within 24 hours of birth?

Can baby have lung aspiration disease if passed meconium within 24 hours of birth?

???????: If the baby had a meconium bowel movement before it was born then it is possible , it depends on a lot of factors like how thick and old is the meconium, how much stress the baby had, if the baby had the movement after birth then no, that is why I do not let my patients go past their due date as the risk of meconium aspiration and other problems( why that can happen anytime)is higherafter40weeks. ...Read more
